Panel wav files

This panel contains 70 or so wav files, and they are WAY too loud. Lowering 'cockpit' volume in FS does not change them.

Windows 98 had a device that I used to vary the volume of wav files, but I don't find it in Vista (Home Premium).

Perhaps it's renamed to ...?

Anything in FS SDK's, manipulate wav files?

I downloaded a couple of 'free' sound programs, but for some reason they wouldn't save the lowered setting.

Which panel for which aircraft, and where did you get it?

Oh yeah, huh? It's Richard Probst's 2004 727 panel. Available at the usual sites. I think I got it from AVSIM.

I've used Audacity (great sound edit program - google for it) to reduce the volume of the 400hz background sound as it was the one that was getting on my nerves; worked fine.

Does Vista have a program amongst its accessories called sound recorder as per XP if so you can quite easily drag WAVs into it and lower the volume that way.
Sometimes a file of wavs can have a cfg in it that will allow you to alter the volume, the figure to look for in the CFG  entries is 100 at the end of each line and simply reduce them to something like 85 that will also reduce the sound.
I f you have soundblaster  there is some fancy software that comes with it (wav studio)that will also reduce and save WAVs.By far the easiest way is the first Sound recorder method.
If you new someone with XP you could save a the WAVs transfer to XP and use Sound recoreder .
These various methods are all fairly easy to do just fiddle about and you will get it.
I agree with you about some sound files.....I.e some callouts on approach to land as an example  could be SO loud and unexpected  I would almost jump out of my seat.WIND SHEAR was another heart stopper to.

The cfg file for the aircraft wav files in the 'sound' folder has some entries that you can modify the volume for, but not the dedicated panel wavs in the panel folder, I think. These are called by the governing .gau file and I don't think there's an associated cfg file.

Great tip though about editing the volume in Sound Recorder - hadn't thought of that. (I read the instructions for the Probst 727 panel to see if I could get some clues, and the author mentions it there! Duh.)

If you need any files from AVSIM you are going to have to wait as the AVSIM library is still down as of this writing. It should be up and running hopefully before the end of the week. 8-)

Are you sure those panel WAVs are not in your main FS sound folder?They can sometimes take a bit of finding in there but  I have had to do this in the past and although rather tedious its better than being blasted by the errant WAVs.

The Probst 727 panel (and indeed the TinMouse II panel) require these particular sound files to be in the panel folder, or the sounds (switch clicks, background ambience etc) don't work. Also, the panel folder itself has to be in the 'fsfsconv' folder within 'aircraft' or else - guess what - the sounds don't work. The readme with the TinMouse panel in particular is clear on this. Must be something to do with the way the gauge is coded.

There is a program called RESHACKER...Now iam not to sure about all this XML stuff,but i am pretty sure it allows you to alter the volume of these particular sounds as well.I have used it  and I know it works ,but again I am afraid you will have to suss it yourself as I can't remember the procedures.
Try posting on this site and other well known Sim sites a query about RESHACKER (FREEWARE BY THE WAY)and what you are trying to do and i am sure someone will help you.

...or indeed, download the latest version of the panel (with more variants on the way) from our sister site, HJG.

I'm not sure there's a problem as such with the WAVs, just that some are too loud. Changing the individual file's volume using Sound Recorder - assuming there's an equivalent in Vista - should do the trick. The one I reduced the volume of was rp727_2_400hz.wav, a background instrument noise which was just too durn loud.

Aside from all that, these (Probst's 727 & 732) are two of the best panels in FS'dom, IMO,  check 'em out if you haven't tried 'em  ;)
