Help with WORLD.CAB file

Hi, I recently installed FS9 on my PC with a problem.  The disc 4 is severely scratched, though it still works...until I get to world.cab during the installation.  The CD-ROM can't read it because it is so scratched, so I just skip the file and go ahead with the installation.  I'm pretty sure this is an important component of the game, so would anyone know where I could possibly get this file for download or something? Or will I have to purchase FS9 again?

I recommend purchase as anything you might find for download would be an illegal copy.

If memory serves, I think Wii was able to write Microsoft, explaining a similar situation, and he was able to obtain a new copy from them free of charge. Since they know you need disk four to use the sim, and if they can see that you have a legal copy of it, they might work with you. Couldn't hurt to try, right?

Here is something else you might try -

Place your Disk 4 in your CD drive and using My Computer, see if you can "explore" that drive and the disk.

If so, Copy the World .cab to a temporary folder on your Desktop.

In that temporary folder create a new "dummy" folder named Flight Simulator 9 and unzip the cab file to that new folder.

You should end up with scenery and texture folder.

If all that works, then create a new sub folder in your real Flight Simulator 9/Scenery folder and name it World.

Place the two folders (scenery and texture) from your dummy folder into that World folder.

Of course this is all moot if your CD drive cannot read the disk and/or cannot copy the World.cab file.

Might be worth a try though.

I have the EXACT same issue.  I just reinstalled Windows and my disk 4 is scratched up pretty bad and cannot read World.cab and stops at 93% installation.  I also cannot copy and paste it to my desktop because I keep getting an error saying its unreadable.

You can try something that I've done often to retrieve music from badly-scratched CDs, and there's no reason why it shouldn't work with your disk 4. This is the 'nose-grease' solution - no vomiting, please. This is NOT an April Fool!

Simply rub the side of your nose with your index finger, then rub what's on your finger onto the surface of the disk in the places where the scratches are most obvious. It works because nose-grease has approximately the same refractive index as the polycarbonate of the disc and so the laser is not refracted away from the data.

Once used, the surface coating(!) can then be removed with a clean cloth...

The disc should still be OK for booting up the sim if it gets as far as world.cab, as I think all the program does is check that it;s a valid disc when it starts the sim up.

Ear wax, eurgh. My little boy used to ... no, that's too disgusting, I can't possibly share that. Good job he doesn't do it now. I'm a confirmed nose-grease man myself, AND it cures scratched CDs to boot: well, for one play anyway; or at least enough leeway to get into trusty iTunes.

Just to clarify, dear readers, we ain't talking what our US cousins call 'boogers'. Nose grease comes from the OUTSIDE of your nose.
