Now I've really buggered it up...

Tried to add an F-4 Phantom by ALPHA to my sim. I think the model is for CFS-2. I disabled the features that made the model incompatible with FS9. I couldn't get the thing off the ground, so I trashed it out of the Aircraft folder. When I tried to launch FS again, I got this: . What do I do now? I can't launch the sim.

There are a few things you can do. I'll assume (yes I DO know how to spell it ) that you got this message after loading the "previous flight" right?

In any case, the easiest fix would be to put the F-4 back (even if it doesn't work correctly) get the sim going, then exit again after loading a default ( or any other) aircraft in your hanger that works. That should get rid of this message. Then you can safely remove the inoperative model.

OR, (my least favorite option)

You can always delete, then rebuild you sim's FS9.cfg. If you did that, you wouldn't need to worry about temporarily reinstalling the bad F-4.

Let's try the deleting of the .cfg folder. I have it backed-up in another folder. Can I just delete the one in use right now (the one seemingly giving us the problem) and slide the back-up in? Rebooting from zero power doesn't help. I don't remember if I got the box after loading the previous flight. The thing wouldn't gain any altitude and just belly-flopped into the ground, so I knew it was never gong to do me much good, being incompatible and all. Why keep it, then? I went straight to the Aircraft folder of FS9 and deleted that airplane, then went back to try another. When I tried to launch FS, the box showed up. Now I can't do nothin'...

If the backed-up fs9.cfg was made for your current system and configuration (ie same video card, etc..) you should be able to.

I think what I can do is to delete the current Aircraft folder in FS9 main, drop in my back-up and lose a few airplanes in the process. Really hate to do that, but I suppose I can make a copy of the offending Aircraft folder and keep it for later repair. What think you?

I'm copying the file now. It's about 4Gb, so it will take some time...

I don't understand this. I have installed, tried, hated and removed many airplanes in the past. This has never happened at any time before this. I thought that once you wiped out an airplane and then went back to the sim, it would work just as if the offending airplane had never been there. I must say I had the sim minimized when I wiped out the Phantom. Could that be a problem? Could the sim being open while I was making changes to the FS9 Main folder be part of the problem?

Not sure where you found that Config folder. I can't make out any details in your shot. What you're looking for is a file named fs9.cfg in this location:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[Your Username]\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9

Windows Vista: C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9

Either delete the file or open it in Notepad to edit it.

I suspect you saved the flight before quitting FS9 making it your default flight. The reason for the error is that FS9 can't load the aircraft used in the default flight as you deleted it.

OK, I found the config file in question way up behind the C: drive and a few clicks in. Do I delete the whole shebang or try to edit just those few lines called-out in a post or two earlier?

Deleted just that one line. It works again! Many, many, many grateful thanks to all who helped. What a lifesaver you guys are! Now I have to put the original folder of all my airplanes back in-- sans the offending F-4...

I'll never forget where it is now. I have been in that file, many moons ago. I changed something to do with how sharp the scenery is-- something called MAX_TERRAIN_VALUE or somesuch blather. I think it only goes up to 22. I have it set at 19. Can I up it and get more crisp scenery? I'm going to make a copy of that file and keep it in my Precious Files folder...

Again, I want to sincerely thank all who jumped in to help. I thought my whole FS world had crumbled to dust right before my eyes. Not to mention my real world. I love playing around with FS, even though I haven't a clue as to how to conduct a flight from one point to another. I take off, flit around a bit, try to land and crash badly. I don't have the time to sit and learn how to do it the right way, so I just fool around with it. FS is an escape for me; something that takes me away from the pressures and worries of the real world, if just for a bit. Hey, we all need some respite, right?

Glad you sorted the problem out - I have no idea either what the 'config' folder does; seems to be a load of HTML FS9 configuration help files.

As I remember, this setting deals with the resolution of the terrain mesh you use.  If you are using high resolution terrain mesh (like the FSGenesis parts of the world with very fine mesh...for fs2004) you need it set high.  I too have it at 21.
