Tower view is not where the tower is

Postby Jaypee Dippel » Fri Dec 12, 2008 8:44 pm

I've noticed that at some of my airports the tower view is not where the tower is, in fact it is often in mid-air not at a structure at all. Has anybody seen this and is there a fix for it.

Some airports such as Seatle-Tacoma used to have the correct tower view but they don't now.

A tower can be added or moved using the free Afcad program by Lee Swordy.

To move one, just open the airport in question and look for the little symbol on the afcad which has a T in it - on mine it shows as a pink circle with the T.

Clicking on an existing one will show the coordinates and elevation - all of which can be edited.

If just moving one, click on it and drag it to your preferred location.

To add one, click on the Insert label and select Tower - a screen will display and you can set the location by clicking on the proper spot on your afcad.  You can even place the view in a Tower object (using a corrected elevation) to simulate the view from the Control Tower itself.

Hope these ideas are helpful.

Opa, Is it really you? the Tricks & Tips guy? Wow! I'm humbled.
I'm willing to try this Addon utility you suggested but I'm comfused as to how I lost the correct tower view in some cases. Is there a default setting for tower views, if so is it possible that I accidentally changed them somehow?

I thought I had seen a download for FS9 that corrects the misplaced tower views, but I couldn't find it with a search...  :-/

No problem.  I'm going to keep looking, because I'm sure I did not "imagine" it.   :-?

Sounds like maybe "autower" would do the trick. I use it more to keep proper views of aircraft in spot view when on approach. It does read all installed airports and create a tower viewpoint accordingly.  Can't find it on Simviation but it is here: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?Sea ... &Go=Search

It is me.

I have no idea why the default view might have "changed" but strange things do happen now and then with no obvious reason.

A month or so ago some of my tower views went haywire - was looking at the sky rather than the aircarft on the runway. I never did figure out what was going on - and just as suddenly as it appeared, things went back to "normal".

I use (and highly recommend) the Autower add-on by Christoph Langguth.

Opa, CAFedm, Thank's for the advise. I'm going to try 'Autower' and report back. JP

I've discovered something.
Opa discribes in one of his tricks & tips about going to map mode and dragging the aircraft icon to change the location. The same can be done with the tower and you can pinpoint the location by lattitude/longitude and altitude. Unfortunately it only re-locates it for that flight.
For Seattle-Tacoma for instance I flew the aircraft directly over the tower, paused, went to map and dragged the tower icon to the aircraft icon and it worked.
Can anyone suggest a way to perminently save the tower location? ;)

Don't know what would happen if you saved the flight at that point.

Alternatively I think you can do it in AFCAD.

AFCAD is a must-have. You can get it here ---> http://www.simviation.com/fs2004utilities1.htm
