Scenery update for Greater Toronto Area

Postby JJH » Wed Dec 17, 2008 3:33 pm

While this question concerns add-ons, it's really a technical question. Having downloaded several scenery revisions pertaining to Southern Ontario and Toronto Pearson Airport in particular, In my early days as a member of the forum, (early Dec/08) I was referred by Wii to a site which contained significant Canadian content. One which particularly interested me was "Toronto - The Greater Toronto Area for Ultimate terrain". Included in the instructions was " Remove any 3rd party AFCAD files you may have installed for CYYZ, CYTZ and CYZD  eg. AF2_CYYZ.bgl".  While I've downloaded the program into my temporary folder, I havn't installed it because the size and complexity of the thing scares me. In particular, I don't want to sacrifice the new Pearson airport I previously downloaded for something I know next to nothing about.

Has anyone out there downloaded this upgrade? And if so, if I remove CYYZ (Toronto Pearson Airport), does anyone know if this new download will replace it with the same or something better?

I currently have both the addon Pearson from this site, as well as the Toronto package from FlightOntario, and they work great together. The FlightOntario package will not (should not) mess in any way with Pearson International, but what it does do, is installs custom scenery for Toronto/City Centre, Downsview, and I believe one other suburban airport in the area. It also enhances the city and suburban environment with new ground textures, and autogen.
Again, you should be safe with the addon Pearson installed. Just follow all of the directions in the readme, but amend them as necessary if they mention adding to or making modifications of any sort to the International airport area.
As long as you follow the directions, everything should be fine. It's an excellent scenery, and well worth the download, particularly for the City Centre airport.

When you are done with that, I would also recommend

I seem to have encountered a small (hopefully) problem. The texture seems to be missing from most of the major buildings in downtown Toronto, with the exception of the SkyDome. Thet appear as blank shades of white and gray, no windows etc. I downloaded the contents of GTApart2. directly into the Toronto2/textures folder as instructed. When I went into the textures folder, I found almost all of the icons contained therein appeared as paintbrushes laid on pages. When I clicked on them I got the message "drawing failed". I expect I have done something wrong. Hang on! I think I may have neglected to extract the contents of "effects.zip". Wait till I check that.

I checked the effects out and that was done OK.

I checked a few more things while I was at it.  When I attempted to start a flight from Hamilton or St. Catherines, FS abruptly quit.

One other point which may or may not be relevant:  At the beginning of the instructions, there was an instruction to remove any 3rd party AFCAD files, including AF2_CYYZ.bgl, which I did. Towards the end of the instructions, there is an instruction to remove the AF2_CYYZ.bgl file from the Toronto\2scenery folder if I don't have SimFlyers CYYZ installed, which I don't. So I removed it. Which means I don't have a copy of that bgl installed at all.

Any suggestions as to what I most likely did wrongly?

You should at least have one CYYZ AFCAD installed somewhere.
I have never had the crashing issues at Hamilton, so I'm afraid I can't help you there, other than to say that it is probably related to an AFCAD problem either there or in that region.

I, I believe, misunderstood what I was doing from the start. I neglected to purchase and download "Ultimate Terrain Version1.2" from Flight1.

Can I install it now or do I first have to uninstall the files and folders associated with the Greater Toronto Area enhancements I added yesterday, and re-install them after I install Flight1's program? :-[ :o

I have reversed everything and tested it. It is as it was in the beginning...    I will try again after the holidays maybe.
