I like to do both. When I just need to blow off some steam, I hop in something fast and rediculous and let her rip.
But as I get more knowledge of flying, I want to actually learn what all the dials and gizmos staring at me do, and how to use them properly.
Those quick lessons you gave me Fozz, really opened my eyes to how much I'm really missing in this game. That first time I found the airport by adjusting some knobs and following some beeps on the radio was one of, if not the most fulfilling experiences I've ever had in the sim.

I know exactly what feeling you're talking about! Take Brett's PPL lessons and you'll feel even more fulfilled and 100x more knowledgeable about flying small props. You'll feel like walking right over to your local airport and hijacking a plane just because you know you can do it in the sim

Over the past 10+ years of MS Flight Simulator navigating, especially around Califiornia, have refreshed my pilot skills since 1955, but the Flight Simulator is still a "Game" to me, as is my copy of "Wheels of Steel around America" Truck driving game...

..its just a bleedin' Truck driving Game!... ...!

Piloting my real Cessna 150/152 around Herefordshire, in the air, or riding my Motor Bike on the road to the Airfield , is a different matter altogether......!

A few short trips that I like:

Inter-island Hawaii flights!
(Honolulu - Maui, Maui-Lanai, Maui - Kona, Kona - Hilo, etc)

St. Petersburg, Russia to Helsinki, Finland.

Alderney, UK to Jersey or Guernsey.

Jersey, UK to Dinard (St. Malo LFRD), France.

Toronto, Canada to Buffalo, NY, USA. (Or Rochester, NY, US)

Washington DC metro area (Reagan Natl, KBWI, etc) to New York Metro area. (KJFK, La Guardia, etc)

Of course, having said all of that, I still get lost without my trusty FS9 GPS system, Although, I have never had the chance to fly in the real world, it is #1 on my list as soon as the kids grow up and move on. I try to use this game for fun, and early practice for that great future event.
I envy you in that respect fozz, I can think of no better way to spend a day than cruising through the country side, going to the airstrip, flying around in my own plane, and then coming home to a nice self cooked hot plate meal, from a gas cooker no less.

Look online for some nice sceneries of Alaska and British Columbia. I love to fly in the area around PASI (Sitka)
