How to move the eyepoint?

Postby homebrewer » Sun Oct 05, 2008 2:17 am

Is it possible to move the eyepoint around in FS? I was just fooling around in the King Air 350, and I think I should be able to see more sky ahead and less of the panel. I feel ike Napolean flying these airplanes. How can I raise the eyepoint to feel more of my 5"-11" height when in the VC?

Hi homebrewer.

You can raise your eyepoint in the VC by looking for the following section in the aircraft.cfg file - make a backup before you start.

[Views]
eyepoint=43.3,-1.68,5.5   //(feet) longitudinal, lateral, vertical distance from reference datum

These are my settings for the 737 Experience - the last figure is the vertical height. Change it upwards (or downwards) in increments of 0.1 (you won't need many) until you get to the view you want.

For 2D panels, you can alter the angle of view out of the windows so that you see more ground. In the panel.cfg for your panel (make a backup first):

[VIEWS]
VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=7.000, 0.000, 0.000

Upping the first figure will increase your ground view, i.e. make it look as if you're looking down a little more. Adjust to suit.

;)

That, and the F1 view module is also handy. With this, you can use the scroll-wheel of your mouse to zoom in and out in the spot, 2-d, and VC views. Available here:

Since I use a joystick, I removed the key assignments for the elevator and aileron (arrow keys on the keyboard) and assigned those keys for

Can't it be done by using the Cntrl or Shift keys and holding down the + and - keys in some manner or sequence? Maybe it was the -> and <- keys; I can't recall. I did this on my abacus A380v1 over a year ago on another computer. I was able to get views like you'd get if you were a cat slinking around the flightdeck.

In the VC.....

Ctrl+Enter/Backspace=Back/Forward

Shift+Enter/Backspace=Up/Down

Ctrl+Shift+Enter/Backspace=Right/Left

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Hi, homebrewer.

Really can't understand the problem. 'Ctrl/Enter' to lower the eyepoint notch by notch, 'Ctrl/Backspace' to raise it, 'Spacebar' to put it back to 'default.'

As far as I know those are the defaults. Check by calling up 'Aircraft/Kneeboard/Keys,' or look in 'Settings/Assignments,' to make sure your settings haven't been changed in some way. Also make sure that 'Numlock' is on, I think that can sometimes affect keystrokes.

Funny - that's one reason why I don't use FSX. The same keystrokes apply in the 'Virtual Cockpit,' but for some reason they don't in the 2D view. Spoils the game for me, makes taildraggers just about unflyable.

This looks familiar. I'll try it...

Sorry, homebrewer, told you wrong. Should have looked it up, it's so 'automatic' that I worked from memory.

'Shift+Enter' down, 'Shift+Backspace' up, 'Spacebar' back to default, in either cockpit view in FS9.

Only works in the VC in FSX. Don't know why on earth they didn't leave it in for both views, it seems to have been part of FS since the Wright Brothers were around.....

I fooled around with it some last night. I could make it go up, but not down. I could make it go to the right, but not to the left. Your latest instruction ought to do the trick...

I could make it go up, but not down........etc.

Got Setting>Controls>Assignments--View Commands category and check that the 'Eyepoint (move xxxx)' keystrokes are still assigned.

I just remembered that I've seen add-on gauges somewhere, that simulate a powerseat control switch. Anyway, there are lots of ways to do it. I hope you find one that you like.
