Want more TREEEES?

Postby Groundbound1 » Sun May 25, 2008 12:31 am

First, I may get "shot down" for posting this, but I thought others might like to know about it.

And Lynn, Bill (and anyone else) I mean no disrespect. Silver Wings is a cool package, it just may not be for everyone. If anyone IS put off in any way by this post, PLEASE accept my SINCEREST apologies in advance, and I will gladly remove the post at once. (unless the mods beat me to it)

Second, this is not official in any way. It's just something I tried, and it seems to work pretty darn well! (This could even be old "news" but I JUST figured it out, so it's new to me

LOL... yeah this is very cool except one problem if you are a city dweller...
ALL the trees are the same size, and ALL the trees are approx 4 times the size of an average house so if you fly over your favorite village or town, you only see trees, trees and more trees, and if you fly very low you may see the odd house in the trees ;D
I removed all the .agn's and only added the (1791) world .bmp textures.
This look fantastic, as it puts a lot of greenery into the scenery and the 4 seasons look great ;)

Have you tried the alternative tress textures called TreeGen ?
The replace the default trees by smaller ones, the effect is very cool, and it may solve the issue you are describing.

;D

Not only that, but have a good look around at the trees in your neighborhood. They are almost CERTAINLY a lot bigger than the sim normally makes them out to be.

To be honest, I don't mind the occassional tree sprouting up real close to a building, (or even from inside it ;D) that's still more realistic to me than default.

I also like the way their .agn files place the trees in stratigic locations,  following the railroads, and other "natural" features of the terrain. as opposed to the sim, planting them more randomly.

@Daube, yeah those are the ones I normally use.

GB1, having a look around outside, yeah you probably right, its a long time since I looked at all the trees around us.
I still feel though if the SilverWing trees were half the size it would be more fitting.
They do look great in the hills and forests though :)

Thanks for the tip.
I used to have SW, but didn't add it back on after a fresh install. Mainly due to the roads and some other things I didn't like above 1000ft or so. But I always liked the trees in it. I am downloading it now and will give this a try.

A as close as possible comparison taken at 1200 feet.

Reduced in size for display:

Normal - no mods:

With SilverWings .agn's as suggested by GB1 above:

Do note the FPS - makes a big diffs and this mod could aid those who have lower end PC's.

And this is what it looks like with only the .bmp files:

The complete mod installed:

There is also other stuff like animated water, season changes etc which looks very nice.
