A fruitless quest, perhaps?

Postby Kaworu » Tue Jul 15, 2008 3:40 pm

Hello, all, I wish i could be on more often but things have been  :o ::) :-? lately. oh well.

Well, I've been looking for a way to use FSX scenery files in FS9. I've been searching through Google and I've come up with 10,000 programs that convert FS9 bgl/xml to fsx bgl, but none doing it the other way around.

I'm betting that I'll have to decompile the fsx bgl's into xml, which I've already done, but where do I go from there? I assume that the xml headers are differnt in fsx coding than fs9's old style. at least, glancing at it seemed that the code was differnt in it's layout.

Just to test that, I've ran the kosu.xml files (example name) through bglcomp, which didn't work, as expected.

Hopefully somebody can give me a solution, and don't worry, I'm not looking for a single program to do all this, I'm willing to work with several to get the job done. Of course, and auto mated program wouldn't be bad, on the other hand!  ;D

Thanks  :D

What your are trying to do is import new technology into a old engine, the other way around is usually possible, getting old content into a new engine, because it retains backwards compatability. But alas, you cant import X tech into 9. this is because for FSX they developed new technique's and ways to use this with new hardware.

What you are doing is telling the FS9 engine to run software from the future, which is as good as impossible.

From what i know about how the BGL file works is that you cant use the high res data that is used in FSX in FS9. its best to look for addons that cover the same area.

Another question, why would you want to run this in FS9 if you have FSX? i can assure that it will run worse in FS9 then FSX, FSX is made to run its content.

Aye, that is what I had suspected.

Actually, I don't own FSX (just look at my specs...). I was only looking for this cause the only scenery add on (of DECENT quality!) of my favorite and home airport is in FSX only. Oh well, on to request an addon!

I really should brush up on my own scenery design skills, but I don't really have enough interest in design (or the time to devote!) to get back into hardcore simming!

You could also get FSX, it's much more likely to use that and the scenery, then to ask someone to make it :).

I'll buy it eventually, but for the time being, FS9 runs good 'n stable, so I say don't fix what ain't broken!

Or maybe I'm just old fashioned. Or stubborn.  ;)

It may however mean I have to slim down my 50-some-gb install of FS9 though! To much customization to give up!

Guess I'm not old fashioned or stubborn, just very, very lazy.

Really, for the low settings I'll have to out FSX on I'll be getting the exact same thing as with FS9, so there would be little point anyway. I'm happy for the time being. Soon enough though, I'll buy meself a new rig.  8-)

Agreed. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are plenty of good FS9 sceneries around. In any case, there will still be bugs in FSX like that in iphone 3G. U can make your own sceneries if U like. There are plenty tools around for FS9.

There still are bugs in FS9, so that really aint an argument, but yes ,there's plenty of choices in scenery for FS9 :)

I use AES, so essentially I get the same visuals as FSX. A little more interactivity, too. Just wish AS would let us build our own airport customizations!
