massive crash / Vista problem

Hi. I just upgraded to a new computer running Vista home premium, and it's running FS9 really well. I downloaded massive crash, and followed the directions to enable it on the 172 but I cannot save the .cfg file. Access denied.

Am I correct to assume this is a Vista problem? I'm using Admin priviledges. I would think that would allow me to edit and save a file, no?

Copy your cfg and paste it to the desk top, edit, save, and copy-paste it back into your aircraft folder.  If everything works out, just delete the desktop copy.

I dont know if it's an improvement or a "quasi" (crazy) security feature.  I look at it as a clever way of making sure that what you are about to do is what you want to do because to do it you have to want to do it and jump through a hoop to do it.

You might be interested in a conversation I just had with a national retailer in the UK, PCWorld Business. I specified XP for my new business desktop (writing this on it), and I was told that 95% of business machines sold by them came with XP because of recognised "difficulties" with Vista. Apparently Microsoft are staying with Vista for the home market but have accepted that Vista is not what it was designed to be, and is not being recommended for business use.

As such, Microsoft will now be supporting XP up to at least 2012, whereas Vista is targeted for replacement in 2010. This is a substantial change, because when I asked about XP support at the start of the year, XP was then only going to be supported until the end of this year.

I make no claim for the accuracy of this: it's what a guy in a computer store told me. However, on the basis that he knows more than I do about it...

Anyway, Mr. Sauce, are you operating with "administrative rights" when you're trying to alter said file?

True. Microsoft has given in to public demand and decided to offer technical support for Windows XP with updates and security patches ("Extended Support")until April 2014. However, Microsoft will not go back on its decision to discontinue Windows XP sales after June 30.

This means that after June 30, Microsoft will stop distributing Windows XP as a stand-alone product, as well as stop licensing it to PC manufacturers like Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others. However, it doesn't mean that XP will disappear overnight. You can still find copies of the software or computers preloaded with it for months, as stores and PC makers typically work through their inventories.

Yes. I gave it a whirl last night, but I did it wrong. I'm going to undo it in a little bit. I was testing on the Baron and I made it go away. I copied to desktop, edited, and backed up the original .cfg as .bak the pasted the edited version into the airplane. No more .bak in Vista? I dunno. Another oddity is that notepad displayed lots of weird junk, while wordpad worked okay. I thought they were all done in notepad.

As to the quality of Vista, I've found it to be very reliable, boots quickly, and the "overboard security" doesn't seem to be more than one extra click, like a second chance before doing something. Not a headache at all, as portrayed by all the Mac VS PC ads. All the horror stories I read and was expecting are nonexistant.

Oh, and get this. I've installed NO anti-virus, no anti-spyware, no anti-trojan, keylogger, or even a third-party software firewall. Only the onboard firewall and my router. Two weeks plus and nothing. I'm still waiting on the mythical "10-seconds-to-infection" thing. Interesting experiment.

okay, I figured it out. I'm a dummy when tired. Last night I was editing the .air file! Pilot error.

Flaminghotsauce - To edit files in Vista, there is another way. Go to Control panel and then "User Controls", open that up and click on "Turn User Controls on or off" I would guess that they are now "on" since you're having trouble editing files. When turned off you can edit files in the usual manner.

I  run Vista all the time with  user controls turned off and it is much better in MHO.
