Radical Suggestion

Postby captjim » Wed May 21, 2008 10:20 am

;)Hi fellow simmers, captjim here again.  I would suspect that there are a lot of us who are not all that comupter literate, OK I may be the only computer illiterate person on out net.  It would be rea......ly nice if you could go to the site map, download any of our aircraft and get the whole package, without having to get a panel, cfg. all of the dials, adnausm.  If I download an A340 for instance I usually get the generic Boeing panel.  All I'am asking is why can't we just get the whole package without all the fuss???? captjim :-?

Well, a wise man once said "anything free is worth what you pay for it"... ;)

This is really a question for those who upload the hundreds of freeware files for download here... they determine what's in each download.

But I can tell you that many designers offering freeware are great with  repaints but don't know how to make a panel, etc.

I suppose it would be nice if someone sorted through everything and put things together, or listed every gauge file, bitmap, etc. separately... but that would be a very tall order.

There is a Search function in the Downloads section; I find that very useful.

Another helpful resource here is the "Planes Wanted" forum- if there's anything specific you need, ask there and someone might be able to steer you to it.

I understand where you're coming from captjim, but tastes differ from person to person. A panel that I like, might be to simple for the next guy. Same thing with sounds. While it would certainly be much easier on the end user to have complete packages ready to download, that would mean one of two things would have to happen:
A) The developer of a model would have to make EVERYTHING himself, thus avoiding copyright or distribution issues,

B) The developer would need to obtain those permissions from various other developers, in order to bundle their components with his own.

Either way usually wouldn't be a big deal, but those are just steps most modelers see as unnecessary.

I for one, LIKE the fact that so many seperate components are seperately available. It makes it easier to make my sim "MY SIM".

However, what I think would be very cool, is a list of links to help end users PUT TOGETHER complete packages.

Like this:

Take Mr. Olsson's Viper from this page:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2004military2.htm

Add the sounds from this page:
http:/!library.a***m.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004snds&DLID=84979

With with the F-16 panel found here:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2004panels19.htm

And with some of these effects:
http://www.simviation.com/fs2004misc17.htm (not really, but you get the idea)

Yes, that would be great... and maybe someone could come over and install it all, too. ;)

The "price" we often have to pay for free stuff is... a little work. :)

And afterall isn't that what makes this such an absorbing hobby? I spend more time "tinkering" than flying these days!

Nahhh, unless you really wanna! ;D I don't mind it so much myself any more. But back when I was a total noob, lists like that sure would've been helpful.
