To acess FS9.cfg do the following (in XP)

Start - My Computer - C drive (is FS9 is installed there, if not, then select the drive it is installed on) - Documents and Settings - Your Username - Appleication Data - Microsoft - FS9. It is in that folder.

Note: You must have "view hidden files" enabled to find it.

I don't see an "Application Data" folder. I'm screwed...

When in your user name folder, do to:

Tools (on the top bar) - Folder Options - View Tab - hidden files and folders - show hidden files and folders.

You should then see the Application Data folder.

It all worked until I got to clicking on the fs9.config file. I got this screen telling me that Windows cannot open this file and that I could search the web for a way to open it or just forget it...

Select program from list - notepad

That should work ;)

Just did so. Let's see what we got...

Well, I set the level to 21, ostensibly saved it, started FS and I don't see much improvement, if any at all. Maybe I need to reboot? I just flew out of Babb, Montana on about a 215 heading, over some pretty mean-looking mountains. They don't look anything like what is shown in those pictures differentiating the different levels. Is my mesh or whatever it's called too Mickey Mouse to get that level of detail?

I should have mentioned that the landclass in those shots isn't stock either.

It's important to know the difference between landclass and mesh. Think of it as paper mache. The wire frame that makes the peaks and valleys would be the terrain mesh, while landclass would be th skin on top of the wire frame.

So , after changing the "TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL"

Babb is a place that has pretty good mountains. My add-ons consist of just the offerings of FSGenesis and abacus-- nothin' fancy, eh? I have no idea as to how high-level these meshes/sceneries/terrains are. Can you tell me if these things are any good?

I really can't speak about sets from Abacus, as I don't have them, but I'm pleased with the older FS Genesis add-ons that have gone freeware.

Can anybody tell me if the stuff brought to us by FSGenesis and abacus is any good? I've been happy with it to a point, but I want the eye-popping renditions I saw earlier in those pictures in this thread. What more do I need to get 'em?

I know your probably tired of talking to me, but If you want the your scenery to look like the shots I took, seach SimV's downloads for "Gottfried Razek". He's the author of BlueSky sceneries. I took those shots just outside of Independance California. Those downloads will provide photorealistic ground textures to lay overtop of your mesh. They only cover certain areas of the US, but they're well worth it for what they do cover.

homebrewer,

One thought......

When you opened fs9.cfg in Notepad, made your changes, hopefully you hit "Sve" and not "Save As".

If you hit "Save As" it is possible theat notpad saved the fs9cfg as fs9.cfg.txt.

Just rechecked the fs9.config file. 21 is indeed there under the terrain level. Maybe I want more than my meshes can provide. Those Alps shots look kind of like melted ice (like mine do) as opposed to those dreamy ones earlier in the thread...

Groundbound, I always enjoy talking to those with some FS sense...

The mesh may provide the peaks and valleys, but the photoreal terrain does great deal to help trick the eye into thinking there is more there, by providing shadows in the places they would be IRL.

I want my creeks and rivers to actually be in the lowest part of the terrain I am seeing. Is that too much to ask?
