Keyboard proficiency?

My parents want that, despite the fact I have a proper joystick, that I maintain "keyboard currency".

I'm certain there are some of you who piloted quite badly on a keyboard (before graduating to a yoke or a joystick) and some others who never flew on a keyboard. The question is how proficient are you as a keyboard pilot?

I won't fly on a keyboard: title says it all

Basic level: takeoff, taxi (and not to crash)

Advanced level: aerobatics, landing on center-line, etc.

Why do your parents want you to fly with a keyboard? If you fly without a stick/yoke its not a simulator at all..

So that, in-game, should I have a problem with my Saitek Aviator I would still be able to fly.

I did aerobatics with a 777 and still was able to land (in my keyboard days)...

If you have sufficient keyboard skill it won't be a nightmare.

I really don't understand this at all. Keyboard skills wouldn't help in a real aircraft which is surely the whole purpose of the exercise.

That's what I mean..I am sure you were very excited when you first played FS with a Joystick..Imagine a real 737 with a backup folding keyboard under its seat just for emergencies..no sense

I used to fly with a GamePad but when it bit the dust(long story) , so now I fly with the keyboard, and I have to say, its hard at first because the reaction of the plane and your actions on the keyboard are delayed, BIG time. Sooner or later I developed a sort of sixth sense, I anticipate the movements of the plane....



By the way, is there any way to control FS2004 planes with a mouse?

Um yea it's kinda weird your parents WANT you to fly with the keyboard, because, yes the whole point of simulation is to get a feel for the actual controls of the aircraft.

Anyways, when I started simming in November of 2006, I used the keyboard and got very used to it. I used to land the 737,747, and 777 all the time just fine with the keyboard. After a month or so, I bought a joystick and am never going back to keyboard.. It's a wireless joystick and its batteries have lasted me literally more than 11 months, almost a year actually. Just bought even better batteries now, and I use that thing daily.

Um yea it's kinda weird your parents WANT you to fly with the keyboard, because, yes the whole point of simulation is to get a feel for the actual controls of the aircraft.

They'd say that FS is unrealistic from the very start, the only things that are remotely close to the feel of the real thing are the way NAV radios/GPS work, and some of the systems (maybe ATC as well but I'm not too sure). To get the feel of the actual controls level-C or D full-size simulators are much more accurate according to them.

And that thing if your saitek aviator dies...you press pause and recalib..
I can have spot on landings (with ILS instruction becuase manually landings w/o a stick is hard...er...)
