Just a shot in the dark. Could it be your keyboard?

Maybe both joysticks and the keyboard have failed simultaneously... but I doubt it.

Nonooo. I was wondering if the keyboard was the problem & causing a conflict with your joystick. Stranger things have happpened.
It was only a suggestion. Wish I'd kept quiet now.
Maybe update the drivers of the joystick? I'm at loss here... :-/ :-/
Just another wild stab, but if you were to remove the joysticks, reboot, uninstall any software related to the joysticks, reboot again, then without reinstalling any joystick-related software (if any) reconnect the joysticks, allowing windows to go through the whole "new hardware detected" process......Might help?
Let's see if I have the picture right. The sim is working, because it responds to keyboard commands. The joystick is working because it works during the calibration. Sooooooo.. the joystick is not "talking" to the sim.
Make sure the check is in for enabling controls on the first screen for, "settings / controls"..
Also, I've used any number of joysticks/yokes and have never loaded drivers, except one time and it gave me problems like this. Are your joystick assignments so complex that you need the drivers ? Just letting XP "see" the stick/yoke has always worked for me. Are you doing calibration from within the sim; or through the stick's drivers ? Try calibrating it strickly through windows. No sim running and no drivers installed.
Also, also.... you can restore the defaults for the primary axes at the sim's calibration screen (not restoring key assignments).. Try that too..
Whish I knew something else to check..
rottydaddy,
You have obviously NOT bowed to the Northeast on the third full moon after the summer solstice at precisely midnight, whilest holding the stewed eyeballs of a virgin newt in your left hand and repeating the secret spell, "asdasdak ksad ak rkewkmvlja ll;fkas" three times (and the times they shall be THREE... notst two shall they be spoken) while blindfolded and wearing the clothes of an honest man who was born the 7th son of the 7th son.
For shame!
best,
