In the "Olden Days" whenever we switched on our Radio Sets (and Television sets), we had to wait at least five minutes for all the thermionic valves (tubes) to light-up and get up to temperature before we could listen to (or watch) anything...

This gave us sufficient time to make a nice cup of tea, put the Cat out, move our chair closer to the fire, pop on our Slippers, open our copy of the 'Radio Times' and browse through the day's programs in readiness for the slowly energising Broadcast Receiver in the corner... 8-)...!
Patience was part of our daily lives....
