[TERRAIN]

Postby Dan Morera » Thu Aug 23, 2007 9:59 am

So I was looking around and found this set up for the [TERRAIN] section of my fs9.cfg, I tried it and it looks awesome! My fs9 has never looked better. But I took a hit on my frame rates, so my question is which one of these fields can I change to get better fps? I don't mind loosing some of the quality (since it looks SO good)

[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000
TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=20
TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8
TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5
TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1
TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=120.000000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=160.000000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=250

Thanks
Dan

The ones you might want to tweek are the max dem area, The autogen density, the default radius and the extended radius.
The auto gen density is the one you might want to start with try making the number smaller and leave everything else alone. When tweaking it is better to change only one variable at a time so you will know exactly what the effect was. Of course you might wind up changing more than one option in order to bring down the frame rates.
[glow=yellow,2,300] Oh by the way what is your AI traffic set at and do you use any aircraft for AI that was not specifally made for AI[/glow]
Using aircraft that is flyable can hit frame rates real hard. 8-)

Thanks Gary, I use almost no AI (30% or something like that) and I have loaded no AI planes ever, only the default ones. Actually I was testing this in a Cesna some where in Alaska  8-)

I'll try auto gen first,

Thanks again

NO problem but when it comes to AI it is not nessarily the percent you have turned on but the aircraft you use. So even at 30% if you were to use say a default B747 or god forbid a payware aircraft for AI it would hit your frame rates harder than it would using the default AI at 100% 8-)

So I could have my AI at 100% and have no impact on my frames? (since the only AI planes I got are the default ones) I would like to do that. :)

I have my traffic maxed out and all of the sliders maxed out as well plus i have quit a bit of Project AI traffic and I get 30 to 35 on frame rates. But mind you i am using a fairly descent Video card that has 512 mb ram on it  8-)

Those values are wrong and are doing nothing but defaulting. Any value that is out of range from the defined scale of a line designed into the FS9 code will default to base values and you will never know it.

see here for complete setup

maxing traffic is not a good practice. 85-90% does the job and does not kill the system as long as you have the right amount of memory and a good video card installed. The settings listed in that link are meant for a decent video adapter and the right amount of memory but you can see from the list what the max values are and how they work.

A good 256 megabyte video card with a decent core and memory speed will run the sim well

Thank you miltestpilot, that makes sense I was not seeing any difference when I changed those fields. And the info in that link helped me get better fps with a pretty good look.

Thanks again

Does any know if this would work for ultimate terrain?I got it about a year ago and used it for about mouth but removed it because of blurry problems.No one on there boards seems can help.Oh,if I turn autogen and the one above it (cant remember the name) all the way down it clears up nicely but no autogen? 50% at least.with out ultimate terrain on I can run FS9 with sliders all the way up and high weather.
