If the aircraft.cfg file is pointing to a named sound file or indeed there is no sound folder included, FS9 will use the last used sounds by default. As most still load up with the default Cessna, you'll hear that sound instead of what you may have been expecting.
Check the folder that the new AC came in (inside the 'aircraft' folder in FS9) and see if it has a folder called 'sound' in it. If it does, open it. If there are not lots of '.wav' files in there, it should be pointing to a default sound set. Open the sound.cfg file, it should say;
[fltsim]
alias=b737_400\sound
if it doesn't, cut and paste the above into it and save.
