Are you ready to fly an approach by the plate ? No ATC vectors ? Execute the procedure turn and fly the published missed approach, to the hold, enter the hold properly and fly it accurately in strong winds aloft ?

Oh, Oh...... and don't forget flying DME arcs.   ;)

best,

Actually.. you can do it any darn way you please.. so long as you end up going in the right direction, and stay on and within, the the protected side... if you have to share the hold, ATC will give you different altitudes (except on some STARs and SIDs)..

The published method usually makes sense, though.. espescially if your flying something fast. If it shows a parallel entry and you try a tear-drop, it's an uncofortably steep turn.

In a 172 you can literally fly right at the fix and zip into the proper direction/orientaion safely. In a Lear, you'd have to turn way more than standard rate, if you don't enter as published..

Just be prepared to do it by the book for your checkride  ;)
