I want to try FS04 again but ...

Postby WebbPA » Thu May 24, 2007 6:04 am

I tried FS04 (from FS02) when it first came out but I encountered a couple of problems that mad it completely impractical.

1. My old computer with the 1GHz processor could barely keep the program running with the sliders at minimum levels.  Opening the GPS slowed it to the rate of a slideshow.

My new 2.4GHz processor can handle FS02 with everything maxed out so it should do an acceptable job with FS04, which brings me to the second problem/question.

2. I hate the FS04 and FSX GPS.  It's ugly, overcomplicated and a resource hog.  I tried using the GPS from FS02 (I have several of them) but it wouldn't work.

Now that FS04 has been out for a while has anyone created alternative GPS gauges that are more like the FS02 gauge?

I think the biggest problem is that FS2004 uses XML gauges and fs2002 did not. I know that there are a few different GPS gauges out there for FS2004 but I am not sure if they are resource hogs are not.
I can only suggest try looking at avsim or even here. Hope you find what you are looking for. 8-)

There are some payware GPS's for FS9 (or at least I am aware only of payware ones), but their outlook is not so different from the default one. I don't love it myself, but have made due.

FS9 on a 2.4Ghz machine goes good. Ensure you have at least 1Gb ram and as powerful a videocard as you can with at least 128Mb ram and you'll have no problems. You can see the sort of rig I use with general satisfaction in the signature. I have everything maxxed out and have problems of low framerates only with excessive AI traffic (like in EGLL).

I found a some alternative GPS's but no screenshots.  If I can't see what they look like in FS02 I'll try them with the FS04 demo before I decide.  I had forgotten that there was a demo.

Aw crap.

I did a Google search and got so many hits I just assumed there was one.

Upon more careful investigation none of these seem to offer an actual FS2004 demo.

Those were not yet the times for free demos, at least from M$. There was no demo for FS2004.

I'll be joining you soon.  I just got one from eBay.

A week for delivery, another weekend to tweak it and I'll be complaining like everyone else about framerates, fs9.cfg, etc.

BTW, I found a couple of GPS alternatives but they don't work in FS02.
