Water textures

Postby francsal » Sat Apr 21, 2007 10:37 am

Ok, this is a question fo those technical wizards out there!  ;)

I have been wondering, is there a way to use the water textures included in FSX on FS9?? Of all the eye candy that FSX offers, the one that strikes me the most is the new water textures. Now, I know that I would not have reflections of the objects in the water in FS9, but when you downgrade the quality of the water effects in FSX, the reflections go away, and then the water is some sort of "quasi-FS9", bt they do look better than every water texture (freeware or payware) that I have seen to date.

Now, sometime ago I saw a post of somebody (yeah, really specific, I know  ::) ) who said that when creating his "perfect" water textures, he used some bitmaps from the FSX demo (which is all I have, btw).

So I was wondering, is there a way to do that? What files are supposed to be copied?

I really hope that it can  done.

Salud!

Frank.

I wish it could be done. :)

I'm quite sure that a thing like that would grant the Genial One Who Found The Way fame boundless and everlasting. Having the ONLY thing "the cross" has really better over FS9 in FS9 would be... orgasmic. ;D

I don't know about that water, but I'm currently using this water texture at the bottom of the page.  I'm VERY satisfied with this.  The only quirk is to me, it looks best with water effects turned all the way off.  But it looks really good!

Flight Simulator X uses bump mapping and loads of shaders to draw the water. Fs9 dosn't support much of this stuff, so yes, while it may be possible to convert the textures to .bmp, it may not work properly and the water still wouldn't retain the lighting which is currently there in fsX.

Although 'legally' its against the EULA, the best way to get FSX looking water is simply to copy the 'ocean heights' file across from FSX to FS9  ;)

The rest of the water textures aren't rendered properly in FS9, but the file above gives the distinctive realistic wave crests from FSX.

I'm NOT going to argue. All the forum knows my position in this matter, and I'm NOT going to repeat myself. 8-)

I stand my positions.

Have to try that. Thanks. :)
