Canopy glass?

Postby Falcon500 » Thu Apr 05, 2007 1:21 pm

I wasnt sure if it should go here or maybe repaints, but i have a few aircraft that have had canopy textures that look more like SUPER polished stainless steel.

I usually just rename them so they arent used.

Is it a video card propblem (like not able to use a feature) or is it a bmp problem?
What do I do you ask? I struggle! Then destroy! Then try to put back together what I just broke on accident.....

If ALL your canopies are stainless steel-like, then it's a problem related to the videocard. If only some have this defect, then it's surely a texture problem.

What is your verdict?

Hmm... looks like it's the textures. You posted screenshots of an aircraft in spot plane view. What does it look like in virtual cockpit mode? Many aircraft just have "transparent windows" in virtual cockpit view. Here's two virtual cockpit screenshots from the freeware X-Wing, taken in slew mode. The canopy is not just transparent, it uses reflective textures. The red lines indicate how the reflections differ. The only difference is that i rolled the aircraft a little.

If these reflective canopy textures would look metallic from the inside, you'd probably have a hardware issue. What graphics card / drivers do you have installed? (Sorry if this post is confusing... it's late... : )

i have a few aircraft that have had canopy textures that look more like SUPER polished stainless steel.

My guess is the "steel canopy" liveries were intentionally designed like that, especially if those aircraft are from the same designer/team. (These folks and the stuff they design have their quirks now and then... : ) My advice would be to e-mail them to clarify this issue. If everything else works fine, I'd say you have no problem.
Besides all that, I didn't recognise the aircraft on the pics. Looks nice. Could you let me know what it is?

Hi Falcon
The GF4 and MX series of cards are not DX9 compat (only dx8) and thus have probs with reflections in fs9.The easy fix for this aircraft is to open the ov10a_glass.bmp in dxtbmp by Martin Wright http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/index.htm
and make the alpha channel a much lighter gray color or solid white
cheers

Never had any problems of reflections with my old TI4400. Worked WAY better than the Fx5700le I stupidly changed it with at the time. That and FS9 is really only Dx8.1 compliant, not Dx9 like someone in Seattle says. ;D

The minimum videocard requirements for FS9 are in fact a Geforce TI4200 or a Radeon 9000. ;)

:) DX9 cards handle reflections differently than dx8 cards,Fs9 also has a few tidbits of DX9 code in her
Falcon you wouldnt be using FS2.2k?as this also handles the alpha channels differently..anyways the fix I suggested above is the way to go :D

Hi Falcon.
I've just d/loaded the Bronco and it's great!
I have an nVidia Gforce 4 MX440se 128mb. All 3 textures are displaying perfectly.
