Nearest Airport?

Postby wyodeacon » Sat Dec 30, 2006 9:24 pm

Hey folks, I've got another question:
I have been trying to fly to every state on a marathon cross country trip.  I fly vor to vor and use my own kneeboard to keep track.  But one thing keeps giving me trouble.  If I land for fuel, or even if I land at one of my scheduled airports then take off again, the sim then won't give me the option of "nearest airport" in the ATC window.  This results in my having to land at the next airport without talking to ATC.

Sometimes if, after I land, I completely shut down the airplane, turn off all engines and all switches then open the door and shut it, it will then work.....but probably only 50% of the time.

Is there something I'm missing, or is this just a glitch that I'm gonna have to live with?

Weird...I think. I'm not sure I understand what the trouble is, without knowing the following:

Are you flying a flight plan made with the Flight Planner, or just hopping along?
Do you also not get "Contact XXX Approach" as an option ?

I do recall having similar problems sometimes, but only if I utilized the ATC window options, even at an uncontrolled field just calling legs, but landed and took off again without completing the communication process.
In other words, if I approached some airport and called my downwind, but then didn't call base, final, or clear of the runway, I'd be stuck with "Report clear of runway" or whatever as my only comm option... for a while, anyway. Eventually I could raise an airport or Approach controller.
Sometimes it works to actually change the frequency yourself to a nearby CTAF, ATIS, or Tower frequency.

I have just been "hopping along" without a flight plan.
