Can anyone help me find a way to display a 1 line display on the top of the screen of critical instruments (i.e. heading, alt, etc) while flying without looking at the real gauges..???

Hit W .... and you'll get the primary instruments shown in a line at the bottom of the screen.

I have done that.. I am referring to a 1 line digital display at the top of the screen..I have seen this on some screen shots at different web sites, usually in a red display...

Just curious; why do you want it? Using the instruments is far more satisfying. ;D
