is there any way to edit some cfg file so that the gradual transition is, well... less Gradual?

I don't think so. It can be turned off: Menu>Views>View Options>Spot plane: & uncheck the GT box.

yeah i've been doing that for a while.
i'd just like to have a little more action with the camera, especially with my new hard drive, which gets a lot better framerates.

I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about here, but if you want camera action then go get Recorder 1.3!!!! Right here:
