Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Idiots

Postby Ivan » Thu Oct 19, 2006 4:07 pm

And another nice report on the moronic behaviour of FS9 AI.

Situation: On approach at UNNT with a C-119, Tu-134 behind me doing the same...

I get clearance first, then the Tupolev gets clearance.
He's doing a pure ILS approach, while i went in by using the IFR-NDB approach, switching to ILS when it goes active.

So that guy is above me, and gets told that he's #2 on approach and because of that has to follow me.
Because im waiting for the GS to match i hear him approach from behind, going below me. He eventually ends up just ahead of me.

OK obviously I get a Go Around... so i decide to take the gravel strip instead... he also gets a go around, but for some reason still lands OK.
I get a 'you were not allowed' bceause i ignored the Go Around request while he did the same and didnt get yelled at...

And dont get me started on being splatted when on approach by 767s, Il-86s and the rest that doesnt have a clue that there is vfr traffic around.
Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and [url=http://an24.uw.hu/]An-24RV[/ur

FS9 (and FSX too) AI is mostly ornamental, its flight plan is a GPS line, and so no real flight plan, the situation is then worsened catastrophically by what passes for ATC under FS...

Morale of this? Don't mind the AI and bear with the ATC, and if they annoy you, enter the menu world/date and time and put the clock one minute (yes, 1 minute) forward or backward, FS9 will recalculate AI schedule and you'll be magically alone in landing.

In the end, to your question there's only one very known answer. Real Artificial Intelligence is still an utopia, but we've created splendid examples of artificial stupidity. ;D

And sadder still is the fact that once a computer is made that can match the human brain, it will be the stupidest computer ever made.

There is available a traffic separation addon or ai separation..
I often get buzzed by AI at Kai Tak. If you religiously respond to ATC instructions (as one should in reality (except in emergency)!!!) then they usually give you precedence in FS9. It's quite sattisfying to see the heavies on their last drop of fuel being told to go around!!!

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Happens to me all the time.  All I do is land (even if it means running over the guy that over took me) and once Im on the ground I respond to the Go Around request and when it tells me to tune whatever the ATC window lets me tune ground

I have no idea about what you pros are talking-- probably because I've only gotten into what FS can do by about 1%. My employment takes up so much of my time I have very little left over to do anything but wash clothes, do the dishes and get ready to go back to work...

I envy you guys who can actually use FS like it was designed to be used.

Complain all you want, Ai increases the gaming experience tenfold even if it is flawed at times.... learning how to program your own flghtplans increases it twenty fold! ;D

My pet peev is when they give me a short final. At about 10 nm out, they expect me to turn to base and grab the ILS before i get on the GS. I don't like being rushed. >:( I like a good long final so i don't screw things up. Now i just cancel the IFR, turn to base about 40 out and give the tower the finger as i land. ;D

The annoying thing is, even when they ignore you whilst you're in the air, my RAF Dominies seemed hell bent on going around on every approach, trying to avoid me because I was sitting to the right of the runway about 200m away. All I wanted was a nice screenshot of them low over the road!

Short finals are a frequent occcurence in fact. Often seen at Heathrow!!!! Just remember that you need to be at or below 3000ft QFE at 10nm from the threshhold. And doing no more than 180kts. If at 8nm out you should be at 170 or better still 160 knts with most of your washing hanging out.
Easy!!!   8)

You remember me of myself sometime ago. ;D

Until, that is, I began using pedals to control the rudder. :) Been a while now that I've been landing the plane I fly on only by hand (unless weather boycotts me and have to use ILS or go on the alternate if ILS is not available). From the C140 to the A346, there's just another feel, another kind of satisfaction, in succeeding to land in tight spots, stick in hand only. ;)

Once I avoided complex situations too. Now I get bored if the landing is any less than Kai Tak, or LICR, or Madeira, but with traffic that nips at my heels and less than perfect weather (but not so unpleasant to make me deviate on alternate). ;D
