New Scenery and Terrain

Postby Bubblehead » Mon Mar 06, 2006 11:51 pm

I'm trying to install new sceneries and/or SRTM Terrain but so far no joy. I tried to follow the instructions as close as I can including checking with other sources. Somewhere along the process I get lost and I am nearing frustration. Can anyone list instructions on how to do these things particularly in the area of Settings/Library. After I click on Add, now what?

...Hi....Not knocking Ramos excellent tute but just thought I give my thoughts on the matter.....this is for SRTM but you should be able to figure out other scenery addons from this.

..Here's a quick resume on how to install an area of SRTM.............

 1. Download any SRTM area you want from SimV.to your desktop.

 2. In either your Addon Scenery folder or your main Scenery folder make a folder with an appropriate name for the download you just did......eg. SRTM_Gibraltar.

  3. INSIDE that, make another new folder and call it Scenery.

  4. Place the .bgl file you just downloaded inside that new folder.

Start the Sim and go to the Scenery Library, click Add an Area and browse to the SRTM-Gibraltar folder and select it.

Click OK and then close and restart the sim........

That's it.

If you want to keep all your areas seperate then do the same for each area.......OR instead of as in the example, calling that  folder SRTM_Gibraltar, just name it SRTM_AREAS or whatever, and Add it as I said......then any further area .bgl files you put in the folder with the Gibralter one will not have to be added seperately as you have already made the path.......simpler that way but easier to keep track if you keep them separate with appropriate names.

...Hope this helps.....commoner

;)

Oh! BTW..you can delete the download from the desktop or wherever you downloaded to once you have installed ........

Seems there are few questions here on scenery addons in all their forms.

Most of these have 'Readme's that aren't accessible until you unzip the folder and sometimes that means straight to FS.

What I do is download to C:\Download(create a folder). This shows all my downloads(using a download manager ALL D/ls go to one point).

I also have a C:\Interchange(create another) folder which is there specifically to unzip folders into so I can view all the folders included.

Especially 'Readme' because these will guide you through the authors installation procedure if he has supplied one. Then you can select all the folders that need to be in FS and place the others out of the way.

It gives me a chance to review everything before I put it into FS. I may want a panel from one aircraft, simple, open that folder in Interchange and copy the panel to the FS aircraft I want it in.

Anyway, choose a way you like to find those 'Readme's

Well done, comm...!

Works for me every time.
Once you get used to it, it's easy-peasy....;)...!

Just got to remember it always involves two Folders...
1) The "named" folder of the STRM scenery area.
2) ...and within it, an additional Folder called "Scenery" containing the STRM scenery .bgl file... ;)...!

...then follow comm's instructions from thereon...;D...!

...sorted... ;)...!

..Sure col...whatever does it for you is just fine......I too am a tidy freak but I always download to my desktop and file it away afterwards....then clear my desktop, just like I used to do at the office....can't chuck the habit I suppose.....commoner. ;D

.........and yes. as Fozzer points out...always TWO folders are involved and don't browse too far in when doing the Add Area bit..........cheers Fozz. ;)

...and don't forget to move scenery files down in the library - so sceneries are above landclasses are above meshes.

Thanks a lot fellas. Finally loaded up SRTM-Terraon Mesh (one at a time of course). One last question:  The downloaded scenery (let's say of an airport), will it appear among the list of default airports. What country, state/propvince and city will it be under?

Choose the Airport as normal and the new version will be loaded........lets say you  use Meigs Field as it comes with the sim and then get a new version with more features.......it will select the new one when you go there...........commoner ;)

Country etc  etc.?....well I leave you to work that one out  ;D

What happens to the default terrain as the new SRTM Terrain Mesh is superimposed on them? If I decided to go back to the default terrain, can I just delete it in the FS9 Addon Scenery?

The default scenery is not removed it is just not seen as it is lower down the "pecking order" as it were To go back to the default, go to the Scenery Library and either...uncheck the area of SRTM or select it and click Delete Area, depending on whether you might want in back........If you  chose Delete Area then close the sim and delete it from the scenery folder you originally put it in. If you merely unchecked it, leave it in the scenery folder............commoner ;)

...and dont forget to close down and restart the simulator after each change, or you wont see the effect... ;)...!
The scenery is re-loaded each time you start up the Sim.
