this sucks...

my graphics that is!
question for y'all.  My computer is a mid-range, decent machine.  for a while, i was able to run FS9 on it with decent graphics from anywhere in the world.  more recently, i tried to load a flight from my home airport to test out a new freeware a/c.  before, i was getting about 20fps and now i was down to 2fps.  i figured it might be the aircraft, so i changed to one that i know flew well in the area.  this time i get even fewer frames.  i decided to let it sit overnight thinking that might solve some problems.  Next day, i loaded up FS9 and decided to try a different airport so i went to the USS Stennis.  Picked a nice helo and clicked Fly Now.  The sim loaded and i was getting a healthy 25fps.  I was pleased and closed that flight, hoping to reload my flight from the day before.  I loaded it up and was getting a crappy .8fps (yes, that is real).  So, for the next couple of days i was only able to fly helos off of the deck of Stennis.  I was able to fly inland a little bit, but nothing more than 25nm.  When i finally get tired off flying helos, i decided to try and find other airports that i could use.  I found out the Honolulu Intl and the surrounding islands were giving me decent frames.  actually up to 70fps in some of my most graphically intensive aircraft.
Now that my sob story is over...what is wrong and what can i do?  i can't even fly outta Logan anymore and this is my favorite spot to fly around.  suggestions and comments most appreciated.

:)Letting it sit overnight?

Sounds like the wife letting the dough sit overnight uner a cloth so she can make apple pie in the morning...

That will not do.

Try defragmenting your drives--all of them.

If that does not do it, try System Restore and restore your system to a time, a week or two earlier, when the frame rates were okay.

The next thing I can think of is if your memory chip has been damaged--a very unlikely thing--as these last a lifetime.

Good luck and I sympathize totally.

If you got decent frame rates at this airport before you used the last downloaded aircraft then it could very well be the aircraft causing the drop in your frame rates.
Try taking the aircraft to KCRG (Craig Filed) Jacksonville, Florida. This is a medium to small airfield that general avaiation uses, and should not take a huge frame rate hit if your frame rates drop there then the problem is the aircraft. Some aircraft can really take a hard hit on frame rates.
If this is the case You have a decsion to make as to wheather to kepp or trash the aircraft.
Also I hope you are not using any flyable aircraft as AI if so I sugest that you remove them as these can really impact your frame rates.  8)

It could be quite a few things, ill list my thoughts here.

1. Hard drive needs defragged
2. something corrupted in one of your fs files? perhaps try the error checking function on your hard drives.

Both of the tools in 1 and 2 can be found by going to my computer->right clicking on your hard drive (c:  maybe more if you have 2 drives or partiotened,  so do this for all of them)---> select properties in the dropdown box then click tools.

3.Virus perhaps, try a free virus scanner... I think a program called avg is free and if thats the one im thinking off apparently very good.

4.something you installed recently slowing your computer down??

5. Full hard drive or hard drive automatically compressing fs files (compressed files have filenames coloured blue)

As jinx said if all else fails try system restore and if that still doesnt help yo might have to bite the bullet and reinstall fs.

Is it just fs that runs slow or is it all games?

after i noticed this drop i did defrag my computer and i think i got a increase of like .5fps...im only flyin helos except when im around honolulu.  it works fine with helos but even the default a/c are bad on fps.  i have MacAfee virus scan and Microsoft AntiSpyware and they each run every night.
HD isnt compressing the files and i definetnly arent usin flyables as AI...i dont really have any AI save the default.
oh, brain wave...after i instaled LOMAC it started to perform worse...could that be it?

Colonel:

I am sure LOMAC did it--that thing is a killer. I had similar things happen to me with it and uninstalled it--we must have about similar systems in specifications.
Mine is not state oof the art, nor too old. LOMAC, esp. before I changed my power supply unit, had brought my PC down its knees--let alone Crashes, etc...
Il-2FB is also hard on a PC, but not as bad as LOMAC.

Get rid of LOMAC to check if that is the killer.

Hey Guys,    I read your problem with interest.   Always checking to see if others woes can keep me out of hot water.    Sorry about the FPS drop.    What is LOMAC  ?
Let us know what caused the trouble.

make shoure that some how the computer isnt using that aircrafy you downloaded as an ai air craft because thats what my pc did i downloaded an ai pakage and also the 737 exp and the pakage and the 737 exp pakage had a continintle 737 in it so the comp would frequantly use the 737 experence jet and my frames would drop considerobly so check that out before anything drastick like a system restore
big or small i like them all ...? that dosent sound right
slew mode dose not count as flying
