GPS crashing flight sim

Postby Captzoo » Thu Mar 02, 2006 1:04 am

Hi fellow simmers,

I'm new to the world of Flight Simulator and have been like a kid in a candy store downloading awsome planes and scenery to fly.

unfortunately I have come to a grinding halt with my progress in FS9 and ask for some help to solve my problem.

Recently after installing some more aircraft into FS9 I went into FS to fly them. When I flew the first plane I opened the GPS (as I do with all my flights) and FS locked up then crashed without warning. I went back in and tried the same thing with another plane, FS crashed again. I went in again, but this time selected one of my saved flights for good measure. This time the flight didn't even open up before FS crashed. >:(

I have installed the AI package which replaces the default AC textures with World Airline textures but I have also uninstalled it with the same disappointing results.

I think I have narrowed it down to something to do with the GPS mapping or FS map. The reason for this suspision is the I can't create a new flight with out it crashing or I can't access the map in flight with out it crashing.

Can anyone offer some advice??

One of the wonderfull things about FS is we all get enthusiastic and d/l heaps and off we go.

Unfortunately, sometimes some things don't work after we install them.

I hope you haven't installed these a/c directly into FS.
Because the problem more than likely will be in something you have installed rather than a GPS problem.

Take out all the a/c you installed and reinstall them one by one and run FS9 to make sure that whatever you install does not affect your system.

When you add anything do it individually and run FS9 for the result of your latest addon.

Hi Captzoo, when you were installing the gauges for the aircraft in the FS9/Gauges folder did they ask to overwrite any existing gauges? Just if they overwrite a master gauge from FS then this can cause problems.
This is why I hate auto-installers!

Thanks for the prompt advice guys!

I have downloaded plenty of A/C and fallen into the trap of getting carried away with installing a whole bunch at once. These A/C were installed individually and worked fine when I tested them. When I test my A/C I run from a favourite airport and don't bother with GPS.

I never overwrite another gauge file unless it is newer than the one already installed. But I have had A/C installed with exe files.

However, I will remove the recently installed A/C and see if it fixes the problem and let you know how I go.

Thanks.

You might well have to copy the original GPS gauge off your FS disks and put it in manually to finally fix the problem ;)

Thanks aain for the advice but unfortunately I haven't been able to find the problem yet. Where can I find the GPS map which goes with the GPS bitmap when you open the GPS icon in any panel?

I noticed that when I tried to open the GPS in any panel the bitmap shows temporarily before dropping out of FS. It's as though FS is looking for the GPS map, can't find it and says "nite, nite!"

For that matter does anyone know where the world map is located? The one you use when creating a flight plan in FS.

As soon as I select the flight planner toggle in creat flight, FS crashes without warning or error message.

I'm pretty sure it's not the a/c because I removed them and the problem still exists.

I also run FSM (Flight Sim Manager) which has helped me alias panels and sounds to a/c files, as well as provided me with a list of gauges that are missing within panel.cfg files. None so far have shown the GPS gauge missing.

I'm really clutching at straws here. I hope someone can shed some light.

Cheers!

Sorry,Captzoo,no specific answers here but it sounds strange for the sim to crash from the create page.

Might be wise to reinstall FS.

My system will remove FS and leave added files in the appropriate folders. I normally shift them and reinstall FS fresh then carefully reinstall the saved items.

There is an answer but you might take a long time to find it as a single file glitch. That is the reason I take the short route. I'd rather be flying than finding and if it is in an addon then I just delete the program, folder or file and get on with it.

Yeh, I thought that might be the best solution. I was trying to avoid the inevitible, but you have a good point Col. It is better to be flying than finding.

I'll re-install and be more careful in future. Thanks for the advice.

Happy flying!
