Since I sim-fly mostly air carriers, prop and jet, I fly IFR.  But, whether I'm honkin' along at 3500 or FL350 I always have a VOR tuned in simply because I enjoy triangulation to check my position.  That's the way I learned to navigate many moons ago; I enjoyed it then and enjoy it now.  Most VFR is done in biplanes or classics where the instruments are rudimentary at best.  Pilotage is fun, too. GPS is entirely route dependent for me.

I lost my license when I busted a physical, so all I have now is FS.  But, I love FS because it allows me to "relive" the past somewhat while indulging myself with the "what if", all the while practicing skills learned long ago.

FLIGHT SIMULATOR:  Real as you want it to be.

I fly FMC a lot of the time, but when doing short hops, flying "vintage" aircraft such as the Captainsim C-130 etc I use VOR.

I hardly ever use GPS, certainly not the default one, but sometimes the RealityXP GNS430 in the Feelthere Caravan to cross check my postition. :)

Instead of using the GPS, I use Pilotage, dead reckoning, VORs, NDBs, and real charts to navigate 8)

FS9 has grown way beyond a game. It is a beautiful thing that captures the imagination of a 2 y/o child to most seasoned pilot. I know only 3 pilots personally and they all use FS.

As a pilot you can have fun & practice doing what you love to do, go where you want to go, in the weather and time of your choosing without the chance of bending an expensive piece of equipment or worse :-[ (the previous run-on sentence was pilots I know response to why they use FS's - they all said about the same thing - fun! first/foremost 8)).

I must admit that I only use VFR now because I'm rather new to the game ;), but intend on learning other methods = time, which in life there never seems to be enough of. Kudos Paul & TSC for the diagrams - they have been saved for future reference ;D!

At $30 for FS9 is rather amazing how much bang you get for the buck. What is literally out of this world is how far common folk have taken it :o! About the only thing you can't do a real pilot can is a pre-flight walk around ::)! How much would it cost to do all additions you can download free via the net, inhouse at Microsoft :P? This would turn FS Professional version into program that cost several thousands of dollars only serious enthusiast could afford :-/.

Forums like here at Simviation are more helpful giving advice than the tech. support you get with any software I know! - that is as long as you can handle a little sarcasm ;). I have had offers from people who live over 30 miles away and in a different state (PA) to come over and help with my FS issues! I have been humbled by the assistance I have received - a truly unique community (:'( - someone got a tissue - sniff, sniff). As for my little nephew, he is just as happy seeing the latest new Airbus texture or listening to roar of RR-Trent 800 sounds on a 777
