707 turns like a PIG.

Postby wilderobb » Tue Feb 07, 2006 1:10 pm

Yes, my 707 turns like a fully loaded 747. Is this normal? I would like to loosen up the stearing a little. Where in the air Cfg. do I change that? Thanks, Wildie. ???

Bear in mind it's a big, old, heavy AC. It may be like that in real life.

He's right, don't expect to be able to outmaneuver anyone else ;)

Theres probably only 3 planes in the world (2 flying) that a 707 would be able to out turn. An-225 Myra, B-52 (BUFF), and  the Spruce Goose. 707s are big old birds, don't expect em to handle like your modern jets.
The 707 is a pig, so that probably explains the turning radius too. ;D

Just a little input here.

Isn't a one-rate turn just dependant on the speed?
I mean think about it....  ;)

..but if you must....

The [flight_tuning] section is the easiest place loosen 'er up.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Hi guys
I am not trying to start a major debate, but maybe the ole 707 was quite nimble compared to some bigger modern jets.

Try to find a video of the 'roll'. There should be some links. The one I have isn't working right now.

Here's a good video agreeing with formula1's post

If the link doesn't work go to yahoo.com click video and type 707 barrel role

Quote from the site
Flying at more than 400 miles per hour just 400 feet above the water, Johnston commenced a sudden ascent. The jet's swept-back wings spiraled as the 128-foot-long, 160,000 pound plane rolled, flying for a short time upside down. Then, for extra measure, Johnston performed a second barrel-roll.

400 feet.. ::)

I think rate 1 is 3 degrees per second (altough I may be wrong thats the speed I remember) so it should't depend on speed
My PC specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3200 (@ 2.2ghz)

1.5gb pc3200 RAM

Yes, is is dependent on speed. If you make a 5* per second turn at 150kts, and I make a 5* per second turn at 300kts, my turning radius will be twice as large as yours.

The best place to adjust the "heaviness" of a plane is  in these lines, in the aircraft.cfg file:

;Moments of Inertia
empty_weight_pitch_MOI  = 3172439
empty_weight_roll_MOI   = 2262183
empty_weight_yaw_MOI    = 3337024
empty_weight_coupled_MOI = 0

Those numbers are from a 737 (I think it's the default 737)..

These are from a 747:

;Moments of Inertia
empty_weight_pitch_MOI  = 18000000
empty_weight_roll_MOI   = 5500000
empty_weight_yaw_MOI    = 16300000
empty_weight_coupled_MOI= 0.0

And these from a KingAir:

;Moments of Inertia
empty_weight_pitch_MOI  = 37000
empty_weight_roll_MOI   = 24200
empty_weight_yaw_MOI    = 44500
empty_weight_coupled_MOI= 0.0

And finally, these from a C172:

;Moments of Inertia
empty_weight_pitch_MOI  = 1400.0
empty_weight_roll_MOI   = 1137.0
empty_weight_yaw_MOI    = 2360.0
empty_weight_coupled_MOI= 0.0

Some designers get carried away trying to make their planes "feel" big and heavy..

You get the idea  ;)

I agree with Brett - and often it's a matter of 'feel' (and personal taste) with adjusting these figures. Mine for the 707 are set a little lower than the 747 but not by much - certainly nowhere near as low as the default 737.

These do make a difference - for example from the other extreme, the moment of inertia settings in the aircraft.cfg for the Posky 757 (which is the nearest Boeing in size to the 707, I think) are lower again than those of the default 737, so that it has a very light 'feel' which I'm not sure is right.

You have to be a little careful though - lower the values too far and the plane will start skipping around on the ground, as it won't have enough inertia to cope with  the mass of the plane.
