Game crashes, don't know why...

Postby Lazerbeak » Sat Feb 04, 2006 5:21 pm

I'm sure there have been plenty of topics on this before, but a search reveals very little information, and none of it answers my questions. I hate to have to ask for help, but I'm at wit's end here...

Recently my game's been crashing a lot. I'll be choosing an aircraft to fly and then it crashes right before loading the flight. Sometimes I'll hit "fly now" and then get that pain-in-the-arse "send error report" window. Other times it'll crash whilst flying. And sometimes it just freezes up on me.

I can't imagine what might cause this, as it's never happened before (at least not with such frequency). I recently downloaded a few new planes (namely the PM2 Concorde, the AH Me109, and the P-38 package by Dave Copley), and I'm assuming those may be causing the problem (considering that the crashes usually happen when flying or selecting these planes).

Please forgive me if I sound like a moron, or am missing an obvious solution, but I don't know how this game works, and I'm unable to diagnose such problems. I'm fairly sure it's the above-mentioned planes, but I'd like a confirmation on this before beginning the long, tedious task of uninstalling these. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it's getting to the point where I can barely play the game anymore...

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lazerbeak. These things can be difficult to track down. It's quite possible that something like a gauge in one of your addon aircraft is causing the problem. The first thing I would suggest is to remove the ones you think might be causing the trouble & try it. This is not difficult or tedious, simply move or delete the aircraft from the FS9\Aircraft folder. If that fixed it you can put them back one at a time until you find the culprit. Then maybe we can figure out the reason for it.

Also you should try by remove (just for test,..NOT DELETED!just put somewhere else) all the files from the add-on folder(scenery & Texture),inside of flight simulator 9 main folder perhaps any change with AFCAD could be the responsible of this,i said so because same thing hapened to me once, who Knows, if still the issue continues, then you put everything back where it was.

Thanks for the replies, I'll give that a try. Oh, and if it helps to say, I don't have any AI or texture addons, and only one scenery addon (Boston Logan, which I've had for a while with no problems).

About removing the aircraft, would I have to remove any gauges, effects, etc., or just the main files from the "Aircraft" directory?

EDIT: Also, it seems that any plane can now crash my game. Even planes I've had for weeks now... Could it be that I have too many planes, and it's bogging down my (already overworked) system?

Right then, I removed the most likely cause of the problems (the P-38 package) and gave it a whirl. Everything appeared shipshape. I switched from various planes (inlcuding other "suspects") and it went along smoothly. Then I put the plane back in, and did the same stuff. At first it seemed fine, but then crashed again.

So I'm assuming that the P-38 was the cause of these problems. I'm both relieved and disappointed at the same time, since I really liked that package. Still, I'm taking these results with a grain of salt, as they may be a fluke, so I'll keep experimenting.

Thanks a bunch for the advice though, it's certainly saved me a lot of frustration.

Right. We seem to be getting somewhere although I can't think of one good reason for the P-38 interfering with other aircraft.

Removing the aircraft folders should be enough. The gauges & effects won't be used unless the aircraft are installed.
