Has anyone used the Global Terrain for the Whole Worled by Stephen Rothlisberger? What to you think of it? Sounds like it is something that will enhance my FS2004. My PC is fairly up to date (memory, videlo, speed, etc.)

I haven't really noticed any fps hits with this very good mesh... no experience with payware mesh, but it sure beats the hell out of the stock terrain. Mountains look more believable, more subtle variations in terrain elevation and texture, and coastlines are much more realistic.
Some anomalies, though (sunken or raised airports, rivers going uphill when they should be lying in valley bottoms, missing lakes, etc.)... but I usually find those amusing. And I think anyone more savvy (and less lazy) than I could straighten those problems out...

Yeah I have noticed those rivers going up the hills in a few places, but I think a few things like that are worth the download over the default terrain.... ;D

I downloaded some following the accompanying instruction. I started with the AF files. Are these add-on on terrains, that is, when I download them, they will be available in addition to the origianl terrain which came with the software. Until I download all the new SRTM files, is it possible to go to the new file/s I have just loaded - to check it out.

Hi Bubblehead..........This terrain is excellent and I use it wherever I normally fly..........I only get the areas I need and these I select from the map..... which you will have downloaded I would expect...........


If correctly installed using the Scenery Library/Add Area they REPLACE the default terrain..........giving higher hills and deeper valleys. is one way to describe it............you can if you want uncheck the areas on the Scenery library if you want to compare the difference. This difference is of course more apparent in hilly areas.......

An example I usually give is the rock of Gibraltar which is virtually unseen with the default terrain but when the AF for that area is installed is very noticeable indeed........

Thanks for offering to help. I think I better take you up on that before I screw things up. OK. Here's what I have done. I think that I am creating a file instead of a folder.

For example: I unzipped an EA12 file and created the following:

I:\FltSim Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\SRTM-EA\Scenery\EA12

I went to the FS9, clicked on "Create a Flight", Clicked on "Settings", Clicked on "Scenery Library", Clicked on "Add Area". However when I browsed to the second "Scenery" folder (after SRTM-EA) anc clicked it, the EA12 file failed to appear. I think I'm close but no cigar. Appreciate any help.

so anyway... one thing I have to mention is that this mesh for some reason gets rid of the Sears tower, which me being a native chicagoan, really bugged me not to see my VFR landmark.

...yes ..pretty close Bubblehead here's my method......in the downloaded Zip will be a .bgl file..........

In the main Scenery folder of FS( or Add on Scenery) make a new folder and call it whatever you wish so you can identify it .....open that folder and make a new folder... call it scenery, and put the .bgl file inside that..........just the .bgl file mind...nothing else.

...Start FS9 and get to the Scenery library and click Add area and browse to the folder you named STRM -EA....the Path will appear...just click OK at that point and you will then have to restart FS9 to get the result.
..Personally I do that for every area I use so that I can keep track of what I have....but you can put all your downloaded .bgl files in that final scenery folder you made and as you already have the path to the first one you did there is no need to ADD AREA..........you only need to do that if you want to keep the areas in seperate folders.....

..This works fine for me but others might do it different....have fun..........commoner

Hmmm, good point- wish I had a screenie handy, 'cuz I'm talking about a river that goes up, then down,  a cliff or mountain. Which way is it flowing now, smartypants? ;) ;D It's obvious what's wrong in these cases- there's usually a valley adjacent where the river should be. The same thing is seen with roads, which often run along rivers in areas where there is steep terrain.
There are also occasional problems with water overlapping the SRTM-defined shores, that kind of thing. But it's still worth it... very nice for freeware!
