Double check that original folder... I'll bet there was a folder within a folder; the program won't know what to do with the main folder if it has another inside containing the cfg, textures, etc. Or simply open FS as a folder with your browser, look in the main Aircraft folder... if you find the one for your new plane, open that and see what's in there.
More clarification: when you unzip the download, you might see a folder called "Piper Cherokee", but if you were to open that, you may see another called "Aircraft", or "Cherokee" or whatever... some people just do it that way. I've gotten some that have four or five layers of subfolders ("Programs", Microsoft FS", "Piper", "Aircraft", etc...) Always check before you load the first folder you see after unzipping...
The other possibility is that there's no subfolder; you may have dumped a loose cfg and other files into your main Aircraft folder with no folder to contain them.
 For some reason all of the above are oftened not mentioned in the Read Me... ::)

Hi cloudflyer...........there seems to be stuff missing for one of the variations if I am not mistaken.......open the aircraft.cfg (hope you know how) and delete ALL of [fltsim.0] down to and including the line..by Ole Egholm...then on the next line change the [fltsim.1] to [fltsim.0]..see below....

[fltsim.0]
title=Piper Cherokee 140 OY-CSF

I noticed the same thing when I downloaded it. It only took a minute or two to figure the problem out and correct it
