And yes, the Otter NG is big, 20 feet tall!

Haven't really tried carrier landings much but I have landed a normal spitfire ( read spitfire and no tailhook, not seafire with tailhook.) on the carriers deck with about 2 foot to spare.

Somebody said that carrier pilots were the best in the world, and they must be or there wouldn't be any of them left alive.

Somebody said that carrier pilots were the best in the world, and they must be or there wouldn't be any of them left alive.

You're looking at a post written by a retired Navy F4 Phantom pilot - I'm still alive and I can tell you, FACTUALLY, that ANY carrier pilot whom doesn't have the shakes and wobbly legs (from fright) just after a night trap (arrested landing), is a DARN GOOD ACTOR and if they tell you they weren't scared, THEY'RE LYING!! The only exception I'll allow in those circumstances is that they're either MENTALLY ILL, ON DRUGS, ROBOTS, or ANY COMBINATION THEREOF!!! I have seen the most seasoned pilots, with thousands of hours and hundreds of traps under their belts, trembling after a night trap. Now, go try to get a proper "hooked" plane on deck at night in Flight Sim and be honest about how you'd feel if it were the real deal. I HONESTLY still get a case of the "nerves" even in Flight Sim. Did anyone know that the U.S. Navy actually uses Flight Sim to train their Nuggets (newbies)? It's absolutely true.
Happy trapping folks!

Phantomflyer. Respect to you. I've managed to land a variety of carrier aircraft in the sim (after much practice and many accidents.) I'm sure I've read somewhere that at touchdown most aircraft should be on full throttle in case they don't "catch". Is this true?

I just put the fully loaded default 747 down on the deck, full stop, no slew.  But I did cheat and use a 200 knot headwind.  It's amazing how easy it is to land the jumbo with enough wind over the bow.  Wouldn't want to be on deck though! (or see what kind of sea conditions go along with a solid 200 knot headwind).

You will find that almost all the AC in FS can be landed at 85 kts, depending on power/flap/trim pitch combo. Practice using that combo to attain AND maintain 85 kts (which will be different for each AC, of course), which you will use on approach to carrier. A 'super spoiler' would help, as would rev thrust and/or good brakes.

I landed a A-380 (11% fuel, no souls) on that carrier west of Golden Gate, and was doing 90 kts when I cut throttle and hit rev thrust. Just made it (well, I bent all the rims, and blew up a few tires (heehee)). So, the secret (in FS9) is to slow it down to 90 kts, not 125 kts like in real life. Flaps (all), Power (?), Pitch Trim (lots).

An F-14 ;)

But that was back when Arrestor Cables was still freeware during the FS2002 days :(

Its as if noone knows about 3WIRE by Rhys Eddy??
Its a freeware trap and catapult thing, works exactly like Arrcab.
When I bought Flight Deck III about five months ago I even stopped using arrcab (which comes with it) and started using freeware, its better and its so easy to set up trap zones. Ever fancied landing a 747 on the Big Ben? Heres your shot.  ;)  :)

The spirit of the thing is to land an aircraft without arrestor wires and something that would actually fit on a carrier deck :)

I bought the Abacus carrier thingy and have had 1 (yes 1) succsessful trap with the aircraft provided out of 100 or more attempts ???

That's because abacus a/c are bullcr*p. They're flying bricks ::) Every abacus addon I have purchased has been a waste of money >:( I've never attempted to land an abacus a/c on the carriers (except the E-2) because it's just impossible :-/ :-/

The 208 amphibian. Once I can find a good freeware C-130 I'll try that.

I have been using Mike Stones C-130 and hav been able to get on deck a few times.

I was just wondering; How many of you are cheating by turning OFF the crash detection? Lets face it, a C-130 has very little room to land due to the Island. I always have my crash ON
