ABC Corsair

Postby Marlin » Sat Oct 01, 2005 6:01 pm

I need a little advice on how to take this bird off, mostly how to keep it going STRAIGHT down the runway.

OK, so this is what happens to me. Prop at 100, rudder trimmed to the right, no flaps. I try to get it rolling with about 25% throttle but it pulls to the right.  So I correct then it just goes to the left, off the runway and, well it's crazy. I just don't get it.

I have looked at the pics in the check list and made the trim like they have shown, but it seems not to make any differance. As I said I only looked, cause I can't read french or whatever it is.

So any advice would be greatly appriciated.

Tons of tourqe is great, uncontrolable torque is deadly.

I had the same problem, you just have to adjust your P-factor down, in 'Realism Settings'.

I have thought about that, but I have heard how hard the F4-U was to fly.

Maybe this is part of what 'they' were talking about.

But thanks for the suggestion!!!!

Oh then we don't have the same problem! Mine did a 90 degree left turn when I hit 19 knots, even with full rudder applied to the right!

It may not be you, and it may not be that controllable.  A twist stick may help, sounds like you have one, also try left & right brakes (keyboard) to offset.  Also try not using the stick at all until you get a bit down the runway.  Taking off straight has been a recurring problem with various aircraft, and I've also noticed, I think, inconsistencies with the same aircraft.  I pretty much gave up on taking off straight all the time, but use of a twist stick at least keeps it on the runway, if not perfectly straight.

ecko, ya we have the same problem. IF at full throttle it will have the uncontrollable torque that will cause it to turn hard left until there is enough speed to send it onto its right wing.

Apex, if you watch a jet take off you'll notice that they don't fly straight right after take off. Watch some videos, you'll see what I mean.

Yep I have a cheap twist stick, but with hours of taking off, repeatedly, I think that I have figured it out. First apply the throttle very slowly at first until it really starts rolling. Keep more right rudder applied and when the bird starts to turn to the right add more throttle. The massive torque will straighten it out. Pretty soon you are flying.

What a tricky bird it is, and too much fun to give up on.

No we don't have the same problem. Mine does a 90 degree turn, and flyes 10 feet into the air, when it hits 19 knts, no matter what you do!

Actually, I get that with almost all of my tail-draggers, except for the default Cub.  But even the Extra does it.

But why does that happen?  Is that realistic, or more like a mistake in the game?

It is the Aircraft. In the Flight Tuning Section some of the settings are too high. I compaired the settings with 3 other Corsairs. I set them to 1.0 . It flies now without dancing all over the place. With the the Realism Settings at half on the scale it still has a lot of torque, but the aircraft is more controlable. Adjust the Realism setting until they are right for you. I have mine set at about 1/4 on the scale.
I hope this helps you.

slowly throttle up... when it starts to get moving use diff brakes to stay straight (if you have them) when the tail lifts rudder works

Marlin - I think you and I have downloaded the same Corsair, however, I have now found a much better version.

Go to page three of the vintage downloads and try the F4U1-A Cosair download there that is painted by Robert Hawk. There are actually two versions but each "fixes the characteristic of the Corsair to spin while on asphalt".

I have flown both versions successfully a few times now, and it is no where near as difficult as what I had before.

Let me know if this helps.

Hay thanks for the advice! A little late, but hay!!!!!! ;D

I found that if I go easy on the gas pedal, instead of like a jet, letting the thrust build up then going, it does fine.

In the Corsair File , look in the Doc File , there is an english file that explains it .
Before I made the adjustments it would do just like Ecko said. I took it out of my Aircraft folder. Later I went back and read the readme file.  I fly it now without any problem.   (I didnt add null zone because I adjusted mine to positive control when I first installed FS9)
