I'm with Foz on this one.
X-plane might look fully sick at 10,000ft, but there's a reason FS is number 1.

I downloaded the demo and tried it. First thing that I noticed was how user unfriendly it was. FS, you can jump in, open the throttle and point at the big blue sky right from the get-go. X-Plane  had me scratching my head from the first time I tried it.  To get a flight sim in the air the very first time should not really require that I have to read the manual.  The slick graphics started only with some real altitude. Buildings looked very blocky too.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

This turned into a nice discussion, I had thoughts about getting x-plane, but that 60 gigs is insane.  I too like the big city approach, would love to bring a 777 over a busy rush hour freeway that appears in detail. Makes you wonder if they will switch over to DVD to hold the massive quantities of info now required to build the simulation.  As an aside, is there such a  thing as too real for us simmers?  If they ever made it photo real for everything, and the views were exactly what you would see in real life, would we get bored with it?  I personally doubt that I would, but Im so obsessed that even with all my crashes, reinstalls, and so forth I always come back.  Todd

You have to remember that the folks over at X-Plane are working very hard on getting it certified by the FAA as a simulator that can actually be used for training, so they really aren't trying to make it "user-friendly".  Also, there are two versions, one with the 60 Gigs of scenery, and one without 60 Gigs of scenery, just default scenery.  So if you want a really good simulator, and don't care about how everything looks, then go with X-Plane, if you want a user friendly almost-simulator, go with FS, or just go the good pilot's way, and get them both.. ;)

Well the logical answer would be for Big Bad Bill to buy out X-Plane, combine the two..............And world domination of flight Sims as in the windows (lower case to reflect my respect) products. Thinking about it that is not such a good idea. The end product would be so unstable and buggy, that you would be lucky to taxi as far as hold short.

However during my short time with X-Plane, I did notice a couple of things that would be good on FS. On landing I stood on the brakes and blew a tyre. The aircraft then lent slightly to the right. Also the back ground ATC chatter was very impressive.

Oh my god...60GIGS....that's just insane...FS looks alot better ...and has anyone noticed that those shots no weather? All of them are clear skies, the FS weather is much, much better compared to X-Plane ;)

Are you sure? From what I've seen is X-Plane's weather at least on par with FS.

I'd like to see some shots with autogen...if there's any.

Yeah but the overall flying experience in X-plane still kicks FS9's butt...seriously, night flying in X-plane is so frigging realistic it's scary at times.

That's a REAL simulator, FS is mostly eye candy, all flash and no dash.  8)

Hi guys

X-Plane looks fantastic. I remember trying a demo a long time ago, but never looked at it since then. I have always just gotten the next MSFS. I am now very impressed with what I see the X-Plane has become.
I think I will get it sometime in the near future. I don't have a problem with a 60gig install, based on the results. Though I might get a 120gig HDD just for it.

I have X-Plane v.7. It didn't really impress me much. I looked at v.8 and it seems a lot like 7. Plus the flight dynamics are funky. I like this v.8.2 though. I may get it. I have the space, but the performance is a different thing.

That is out-freakin-standing autogen for X-Plane. However, the autogen MURDERS the frame-rates whenever I fly X-Plane. Am I doing something wrong in the version v8.0 that's causing the frame-rate killing?

Auto-gen kills me too when I fly over cities, so I don't think it's just you, unless it's just both of us. :D ;)

I just purchased v8.2 for only $32 [shipping and handling included]. It's the one that upgrade my current version. The price tag is not bad at all. Better than spending $72. ;D

EDIT:

Just remembered. I have a lot of money in the bank, and I don't have that many bills to pay [compared to some of you]. Sooooo, I can buy an large external hard drive devoted entirely to X-Plane. ;D
