Reflective Texture Problems...

Postby Dukes » Wed Nov 23, 2005 11:17 pm

Well I recently uninstalled FS9 and dumped the other planes I had downloaded, reinstalled and started fresh with downloading planes I want. I spent a few hours yesterday downloading planes and then today I have been installing them while checking to make sure each works properly. All was well until I started adding a reflective textured skin for Mike Stone's Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina. I installed the skin fine but when I went to test it the reflective bit wasn't working. Figuring it was simply a problem with the one texture, I went on installing planes. Next plane I tried to install was Ric Lopez's Staggerwing which is also supposed to be reflective. Installed as per instructed, went to test, and had the same problem, displays as flat colors. Anyone know what may be causing this?

I figured a week was a decent time to wait before nudging this up... just in case people merely didn't see it before, if nobody replies this time I'll just have to assume that nobody has any ideas about the problem.

Hi Dukes . . . thanks for your patience.

Why many SimV forum users don't answer repaint posts in FS2004 forum is as soon as we post an answer the thread is moved over to the Aircraft Repainting where it will then be answered.

Can you figure out the reasoning behiind this?
Neither can I.

P.S. You do have reflections turned ON in FS9?

Well reasonable logic dictates that repainters might know more about problems with repaints than just random people. Anyhow, this one isn't strictly about a repaint,  the staggerwing is a whole plane ^^

Anyhow, thanks  for replying, in answer to your question yes I do have reflective textures turned on, and I am glad to say up until I installed that texture for the Catalina I had no problems with any other downloads.

OK,  if I've got this right: Your other downloads were reflecting until you installed the Cat, so it would seem that the Cat is causing a problem there.  I don't think a given aircraft would create a problem like this across the board, so it's somewhat or even totally illogical that the Cat would be creating this problem, but try removing the Cat anyway.  Finally:  Try an aircraft that you SAW reflection on previously.  Your statement: "Staggerwing is supposed to be reflective" implies that you didn't actually see the Staggerwing as in fact reflective.  Sorry to be so court-room here, but it's the only way to be sure I've got it right.

Nope... all previously reflective planes are fine. I added the catalina texture which was supposed to be reflective as shown by the sample pictures on this site and in the zip file but when I went to test it it didn't do its reflectivy bit. After that I installed the staggerwing, again sample pics showed it reflective, also did not work.

Sorry Dukes, don't understand your question.

Each plane has its reflectivity contained in its own textures. No plane can have any influence whatsoever on any other.

Not every plane is made to be reflective and older ones can't be made so. Only GMAX and FSDS2 models can be reflective - if you try to apply extended bmps with alpha channel to older FSDS v1 models they just become transparent to a greater or lesser degree.

But anyway, without becoming technical, any problems that you may or may not have are only to do directly with the aircraft concerned.

Hope this helps a little although it doesn't solve your problem. I rcommend that you look for different planes or different textures for the ones you have that meet your needs.

It seems to be a problem with reflective textures made for pre-FS9 planes... I decided to just get rid of them, no idea how they managed to get pics that showed reflective but they did, I'm just going to keep away from pre-FS9 planes unless I really want them I guess... thanks for the help everyone.

Ahh FS2k2 planes (certain models e.g. made with FSDS1) will have issues in FS9 ;)

Hi Dukes...any chance you could say just which files you were using and where you downloaded from?...the plane and the skin file names would let one of us test them out on our machines and maybe find the answer............just throwing in the towel seems a shame........commoner ;)

Uh, Sure. SPBY5a.zip is the Catalina, the texture is PBY_SR2.zip and the Staggerwing is Staggerwing.zip ^^

Both are from this site as I recall. That or FSField.com ^^
