Roger's Kai Tak

Postby Hai Perso Coyone? » Mon Nov 28, 2005 5:50 am

Hey there,
I downloaded Roger Mole's (RollerBall) Kai Tak scenery. It a fine scenery and all, but it's horrible on FPS...for I don't know what reason...I turned down everything including AI...it's really weird...and if you see my sig, my system specs are pretty decent...on the scenery I average about 5-6...barely flyable compared to my usual 35-40...nothing works, even turning down FS to the bare minimums, I know that his scenery is hard on FPS, but this hard?? This is strange...
Cheers all,
Ashar :-[

Yep, I have the same problem.  My fps drops from 20 to 6 when flying to Kai Tak

Whoa, and you have a rather high end system too.
For some reason, I get a similar problem in the default Honolulu scenery, and tweaking settings doesn't help. And my system, too, is not exactly crap...  ;)

Yes, you need to use FSAutostart to turn off all unnecessary background programs and services. The main hit comes just as you approach the Checkerboard, as you begin your right turn. Did loads of experiments and never managed to find the source. I thought it was to do with the water, the remaining default scenery, the addon buildings, static aircraft, static vehicle objects, the trees and the fences, but none of these individually solves the problem when removed.

I've even done a new version using XML but with the existing custom buildings. That still shows a similar problem, although not as bad. I thought that maybe because the buildings were made using EOD and not GMax they could be overly FR hungry, but if you point your view at the fire station and the complex buildings next to the RW13 threshold, you'll see your FR rise not fall, so that disproves that one.

Thomas Kwong had the same problem with his FS2000/2002 Kai Tak scenery. As it is I'm stumped unless anyone else has any ideas. When I can I'll issue my new version which helps solve some of the problem. I'd also like to know how the folks are getting on with the brand new version they are/were working on. Have they found a similar problem I wonder?

The problem is situated in the TAK.bgl.

I deleted all the .bgl files in the KAITAK scenery folder and then put them back one by one (and reload FS2004) to see which one causes the frame rate to drop.
And when I put tak.bgl back, my framerate drops to 5-6 fps

I also tried to delete some of the textures, but that didn't make any difference in fps.

Too bad I know absolutely nothing about scenery design ;)

Well you know enough to say the a certain file caused the problem, maybe you could have a look into that Roger? :)

This may interest you, not sure if Roger is connected with this but it's a project called Project 9 Dragons. A video is on this site giving details,

Worth watching even if your not a scenery designer as there's some great footage of AC landing succesfully, or not in one case.
