I just uninstalled/reinstalled FS2004, and that did not solve the problem.  ???

Put the computer up in the attic, and book a holiday to the Bahamas for a fortnight... ;)...!

Great idea!  Especially since I just figured out the problem.  As one of my troubleshooting steps, I had tried reinstalling the latest video driver from the manufacturer.  But, I just discovered that it wasn't installing properly.  When I was uninstalling the driver before reinstalling it, it wasn't being completely removed.  I figured out how to completely remove the driver before reinstalling the latest one.  Anyhow, the thing's fixed, now.

Thank you, everyone, for all your help.

I was wrong... the driver thing did not fix it.  For some reason, I had trouble-free frame-rates for 20 minutes or so, and then the problem started all over again.

I don't think it's a CPU heat problem, because I would think that more things would go wrong, and that the frame-rate issue would be more erradic.  But, the frame rate issue is so consistent.
