Add on scenery, is there a limit?

Postby alb469 » Mon Sep 26, 2005 1:02 pm

We have been adding a lot of scenery over the last few weeks and now everything seem to be slowing down and getting jerky. Cant say its the hard drive, that is less than 10% full. What could be causing it and is there a fix for the problem? ???

I'm not sure if there's an actual limit to the amount of addon scenery as I've never had enough installed at any one time to find out. Some people seem to have an incredible amount of addon scenery installed & I can't understand how they can possibly use it all. There should be no problems providing different areas you have installed don't conflict with each other. Some 3rd party scenery is very graphics intensive which could be causing your problem, especially if you have several different ones covering a small area.

Providing you installed the scenery correctly & activated it via the Scenery Library it's easy enough to temporarily deactivate one or more areas with a single click on the box next to it on the list. This can be useful for troubleshooting display problems or conflicts & areas can easily be reactivated whenever you wish in the same way. You can also rearrange the display Priority if necessary. This can sometimes be important. I hope this is some help.

I have added a lot of scenery and my FS9 kept crashing at a certain percentage when it was loading.

Could also be not enough memory on the video card itself?

I suspect it's more likely to be something to do with the scenery you're trying to load or even the aircraft. Choose a different aircraft & airport & try again. If the same thing happens you could try reducing your scenery display settings. If you suspect the addon scenery the easiest way to troubleshoot this sort of problem is by temporarily deactivating some of your addon scenery from the Scenery Library as I explained in my first reply.

The limit is your computer. If you have a 200GB hard drive, you can fit in all the scenery you want, if it is 5GB it is a tad difficult.
I have never heard of any limit and as DOug said some people have huge folders running into 30 or 40 or more gigs.

Ben's tip: Only add scenery one thing at a time. Never install a load of add-ons from different authors all in one go. It is asking for problems and if you have installed lots of things it can be difficult to rectify.

Well really I have like over 100 Add on scenery's but the only one that caused problems was the Kai Tak.

I had the extenstive Autogen Kai Tak buildings which is just on the default landmark.
Looked like crazy with a Bell heli for the checkerboard.

Then I installed the most detailed Kai Tak scenery which is confirmed to have the checkerboard,  I forgot there was another Kai Tak scenery in FS9 already from a while ago which was to reopen the airport by adding ILS and IGS to it.

With all 3 combined, it brought the FPS down to 2-5 FPS!
Try overflying close to the ground with all 3 on at the same time, the sim crashes!

I disabled the Kai Tak Autogen buildings and all was fine.

I have a ton of crud stuffed into my sim. Sooner or later, I'm gonna have to clean it out.

The trouble I have found with a bunch of add on scenery is that some times seperate files overlap and they may have some elevation conflicts. MS figured a way to use colors (grey) to define altitudes and if one developers designs use a different but not really noticeablly different shade of grey his/her elevations may (will) be different from the surrounding scenery. It is a really cool effect at first but when the ground drops out from around altitude specific scenery (airports lakes national monuments etc...) it can become very irratating. Load BC XP, Canada Mountain parks, vancouver 2004 and it's updates and fly out of CYRV to see what I mean.
