Longest continous flight.

Postby TNHunter » Fri Oct 21, 2005 8:47 am

As an avid flightsimmer, I have been trying to outdo my personal bests, and when I counted up my hours on Oct. 1, I had logged over 1200 hours in the air, but I have recently begun to attempt longer flights.

Lindberg flew for 33 hours, and I am nowhere near his majestic flight. For the longest flight I have accomplished was a joy flight lasting a little over 7 hours flying over the atlantic ocean.

I did the flight in a chopper than I added to the game, a 1960s style huey type chopper of custom design by a good friend of mine in Texas. It has classic controls and guages, no fancy electronics to help me make the flight.

Has anyone else here attempted flying long distances at one sitting?

My longest flight so far is 15.7 hours. I was almost done the first day but I had to finish the last hour or two the next day ;)

Longest so far was the longest overwater leg on my RTW trip in the DC3; about 35 hours or so (3,900 miles).
Flew most of it at 16x, and it still took a few evenings...
Longest normal-speed flight in one sitting: about 4 hours.

Yeah, I know. But I do have a life, such as it is.
And it would just be too boring and drawn-out to do over 200 hrs. of back-to-back flights in real time, a few hours at a time. It'd take months...as it was it took me- what? about a month, flying 2-4 hrs at a time at least three nights a week, something like that.
And on that equatorial route, it's mostly over water, as far as the eye can see. Dullsville.

The longest flights I've ever flown have been around 14-16 hours from either KLAX-YSSY or KATL/KJFK-FAJS.

Longest flight in one sitting for me was, I believe, YSSY-KLAX.  I fly the route all the time, but I had particularily bad headwinds on this occasion and I think it ended up being around a 15 hour flight.

Longest single flight I did in my recently finished RTW travel was RJAA - CYVR with a MD11 in JAL livery.

Took a lot of time (a whole day) but made it through in one session. ;D

Whats the attraction of sitting at the sim for that long? I dont get it really, my prefered flights are short, often at low level and high speed around the English Lake District,  8) What do people find interesting in flying XX hours over the atlantic etc at 33000 feet?

Well, it is not always needed to fly high altitude, low speed. I personally enjoyed skimming the water with the Mooney Bravo at full throttle. Trying to be as near to the water surface as possible while only using cockpit instruments.

For a short flight, I like to get in the Bravo, put the time compression at somewhere between 16 and 32 X and then start skimming the ocean. It will certainly get your skills honed out for holding a steady altitude.

The way I fly often depends on the mood I an in. If my nerves are fried, I like to take a long flight and just think while I fly. Other times, I like a short flight in a stunt type craft and just fly like a maniac, hone in on the machine and get wild.

Ever try flying from the US mainland to hawaii in a B-17 using only a compass for navigation and hoping that after 14 hours, you weren't a few degrees off, missing the island completely?
