Too many downloads?

Postby gryshnak » Mon Nov 07, 2005 4:13 pm

Will it slow down FS if I install a whole pile of aircraft downloads, or do they have no effect since I've only ever got one plane loaded at a time?

I've got 63 entries in my Aircraft folder already, must be over 100 planes by the time I add all the different textures.  Just wondering, before I go and install any more!

It doesn't matter. As you said, you're only loading one aircraft at a time. It's a different story if you are adding more AI aircraft as traffic.

It won't slow down the sim any since you are only using one airplane at a time but you might get some slowdown when accessing the select aircraft menu.

Yeah it'll slow down the startup time and the aircraft menu loading time. My FS map is 73 Gigs, so it takes like 2 minutes to fire it up.. ;D

words that have no place in Flight Sim.

i have over 63 aircraft and the load time of the aircraft menu is annoying but worth it!

only startup and menu are affected.  I have alot, so sometimes its annoying, but if you press the key of the manufacturers name, its easier.  Like if I want the tomcat, I press G, so I am closer to grumman

I've got approx a 100 hundred aircraft inside my aircraft folder, and I havn't noticed much of a difference in load time

I made another file (FS Hangar) outside of my Flight Sim altogether.  Every now and then I drag and drop those that haven't been out for a ride for a while across.     This keeps my loadup time reasonable and means I can bring them back at any stage if I feel the need.   The gauges etc obviously stay behind.

After many years I seem to have settled on a few favourites but still  can't resist the temptation to D/L new ones.

If I D/L something that I find a bit disappointing I dump it straight away - standards have got very high over the years and some of them don't hack it anymore.

When I download an aircraft, I install gauges into it's panel folder. That way, if I don't want to keep it, I can delete the aircraft without accumulating gauges ;)

I also do that with the gauges. That way, there aren't any junk guages left unused and taking up space.

Come to think of it, I like Bazza's idea of a seperate aircraft folder outside FS. There are a ton of aircraft that I really like to keep, but I don't want to sacrifice the load time. That's a good idea Bazza.
