Online USA Sectionals

Postby JBaymore » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:14 am

Check out this website for online USA Sectionals:

http://skyvector.com/

I am trying to figure out how to put this in the kneeboard easily.  The click and drag function on the chart would be very handy.

best,

Lots of luck with that one. If you manage to pull it off let us know how you did it. I for one do not think you will be able to get the drag and click to work right, But who knows. 8)

You guys, there's a much more simple way that I've been trying to share over the last year or two, but nobody has listened or caught on ::)

Search for 'Matt Fox' at avsim and you will find every sectional and terminal chart for the united states!

They're in JPG format, and very high resolution. They can be used with the FSM Moving Map by Rana Hossain, or with FSX-ionals! by Scott Gridley

What I did was resized the charts (I think I resized them to 50%) and I use FSX-ionals!. FSX-ionals! is a module based program which is basically a browser, with scroll bars and gives you a resizable widndow to view charts. You can minimize it and it will keep your spot. Gives a much more realistic way of navigation ;)

The FS9 kneeboard is a browser . . . any URL placed in a kneeboard_page will open in the kneeboard; the only caveate I've found is if the page Opens-in-a-New-Window, the sim will minimize and open the default browser. this does not happen often so as ageneral rule any URL can be opened in kneeboard browser, including charts, IAPs and WX.

Yes, even the King Video's will rune with sound independent of FS9

That is great, I will have to try that. Now if I could get around this problem: The area where I will be doing any sort of navigation in real life (an therefore in the sim) is right on the edge of two sectionals, so anytime I go anywhere I will need two charts. ::)

That's alright. My setup came with a map of the US, with each sectional chart outlined on a map. Clicking them will open up the respective maps ;)

I'll post some screenshots when I get home from school if anybody wants.

Heya All,

Like Esselbach I have been using Rana Hossain's FS Moving Map for quite some time now.  I have my maps reduced to 40% and I have completely re-calibrated them myself.  I have all sectional charts for the entire continental US and Hawaii.  I haven't gotten around to calibrating the charts for Alaska yet.

As for the issue with two sectional charts that TacitBlue brought up, the nice thing about FS Moving Map is that it will automatically switch sectionals for you!

Now I know that I'm asking for a lot, however, I've been searching in vain for sectional charts for the rest of the world.  If anyone knows where I can get these (freeware) charts, please post a link.
Happy Flying -- And may your main wheels always touch down first!

Thanks for SkyVector's URL, John I opened it in the FS9 kneeboard and all the zoom and pan features work just fine. Cool.

The problem with the kneeboard is that it's a little small, and can't be resized.

What happens if you close it, does it keep your position?

Hey all. I couldn't help but notice lots of users coming to my site (skyvector.com) from this forum. I launched the site 3 days ago and I am happy to see people finding it useful.

Thanks for your enthusiastic words. I'm a private pilot who's spent some time with flight sims, but had no idea how powerful they had gotten.

I'm very curious with the whole kneeboard idea. I'd like to provide a version of my viewer specially formatted for your needs. Can you tell me what you would want. Specifically, what are the dimensions, margins, hotkeys, etc that you would like to see.

Bear in mind that I'm gonna have to pay for all this bandwidth, so you can expect a small part of the map screen to include some ads, but I'm sure I can produce something you'll like.

Lastly, keep up the word-of-mouth. I'm not in the search engines yet, and don't know how well I'll do there without lots of keyword rich text, so I'll depend on you spreading the word.

All the best!

Thank you, Dave for hosting this interesting and useful website. I mostly use FSCHARTS.COM and check realworld METARS in the FS9 kneeboard. I have a dedicated Frontpage website for use in my kneeboard and it has every online flight resource known-to-man included. Thnx again.

I really like that the electronic kneeboards can dial in weather overlays on-line.  It sort of makes up for lack of a genuine weather radar, a problem I have as the wife would really steam if I spent $$ on any of those.
