Making installed planes invisible

Postby hatter » Sat Aug 27, 2005 9:45 am

In the plane selection menu. I remember it had to do with modifying the cfg, I just don't remember how.

Can anyone tell me?

Open the AIR files with AirEd from the Utilities section. Change the Aircraft Type from 0 to 2.

Or you could just change the file extension on the .air file to .xxx or something like that...

In that case the aircraft wouldn't work at all. You might just as well remove them completely. I assume Hatter wants to use them as AI traffic.

I was thinking he just wanted to lower the number of planes without actually removing them.

I think we need a clarification...  ;)

There are other options depending on what you wish to do. If you want to remove AI Only aircraft from the selection menu the AIR file edit is the best method. Quick & simple but make sure the aircraft are correctly installed first. Alternatively you could define them as AI Only (or whatever) in the ui_manufacturer= line in Aircraft.cfg so they're all listed in the same place on the menu.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry for not being clear.

I want to make the default Boeing jets invisible; they serve only to clutter and confuse since I don't fly them at all. I recently got a really nice 747 model, and the default model doesn't quite stand up to it.

I'm still in the process of installing PAI, so I don't want to get rid of the plane completely. Actually, I don't want to get rid of he aircraft at all.

So AirED seems to be the solution.

Thanks again. 8)

Here's an alternative method that not only prevents the selected ones from showing up but also speeds up the sorting and display when you choose Select Aircraft....

In the "good ole days", FS98 and FS2000 created a folder called, "Old Aircraft". I think this was dropped in FS2002. The folder was always empty. It occured to me this was a good place to "store" add-ons that fell into disuse as newer addons appeared and that's what I've always used it for. I added the folder to FS2002 and FS2004 and will likely do so when I install the next iteration of FS.

Disabling becomes a simple "drag n drop" operation.

Just a thought.

The only potential issue then is if any of your other installed planes have their sounds or panels aliased to the defaults - in which case moving the defaults would remove the panels and sounds.

You can get around this by putting the default panels and sounds (if you need them) into a separate sub-folder inside the 'aircraft' folder, and then alias that one.

I'm not sure about FS9 but there are usually master default aircraft that you cannot modify in any way without messing everything up. Try it by all means but the 747 might be one of these. I prefer to leave the default files alone.
