red & white/yellow masts

Postby Merv0728 » Fri Aug 19, 2005 8:42 am

Can someone tell me what the purpose of the lighthouse shaped masts is that are dotted about the Fs scenery, red & white or yellow with a flashing light on top. As far as I can see they dont't give any nav aid unless I'm missing something.

You're not talking about the rotating beacon light that every airport has, right?

Thanks to those that replied.

No they are not auto-gen or the airport beacons.
These seem to be placed at random in the scenery. They may only be in UK, I have slewed around France,Germany & the USA but haven't been able to find any in those countries.

If you want to see one slew to N50 51.29 W2 5.47 heading 123.
I would post an image but can't find a way of putting it in a post on this forum, can someone tell me how?

There's one at Wieringermeer and one at Lopik too.

Conclusion: Radio masts.

In some FS versions which will remain anonymous here they used the masts as impostors for tall buildings

Ivan, I don't know where you got your scenery from but on mine there is nothing at Lopik. On the map it shows Lopik as an intersection & in my atlas there is a town called Lopik & there is nothing there either.
As for the other place, Wieringermeer I can't find that in my atlas.
They are not radio masts, they are shaped like lighthouses with red hoops & a light on top which changes from white to green or orange depending on your viewing distance.

After plotting some of these on the map I'm beginning to think they markers that FS9 uses for navigating.

white/green things are airport locator beacons... most airports have one so you can see it in the dark.

Lopik is a big radio antenna in holland, write MS if they forgot to put anything there

Thanks Fozzer for the instructions.

Here is a view of one of these :-

This may not have worked, I'm only seeing a square with a red cross in it, not an image.

Picture fixed:

(You uploaded the file as FS9-Masts, but inserted it in the pic URL as fs9-Masts. You have to write the file name exactly the same inc. upper & lower case). :D

PS: I went to 'N50 51.29 W2 5.47 heading 123', but couldn't see any mast (Just outside Poole, Dorset, right?)

Have you installed any add-on scenery for the UK at anytime?

Soooooooooooooooooo - anybody know what it is then??

Definetly looks like a light house......maybe from FS2?  ???

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

My guess is that you installed something that overwrote one bgl file with another of the same name.  Where the OLD bgl file object used to be.... you are now finding those god-awful looking things.

Think about what scenery stuff you installed just before you started seeing these.

It likely will take a bit of detective work to fix it.

best,

Oh! dear, I have to give my most humble apologies, just a mo' while I wipe some of this egg of my face.

I haven't used FS for about a year & forgot about a bit of scenery I had installed,it was mainly for Vatsim, Visual Reporting points & that is what these things are.

Once again, sorry for wasting everyones time, I will now crawl away into some convinient hole.
