placement of scenery mesh

Postby snoopy51 » Sat Aug 13, 2005 8:56 am

Hi, can anyone tell me what is the ideal placement when installing scenries and scenery mesh ?
someone tells me that all scenery mesh shall be placed low just above defaulth scenery in fs2004 scenery library, while others say that if you fly on a specific area then you shall move mesh and scenry up to the top of the area list in scenery library.
what is the right thing to do ?
hoping for some good answers.

I'm not a scenery/mesh expert but Frank Betts is . . .

You are correct, the mesh should be installed before the scenery for a given area (if in separate folders).

As you know, FS9 uses a hieriarchy of folders to find *.bgl files which is:
1.)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\ADDON SCENERY\NEWFOLDER
2.)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\SCENERY\ (i.e., trees_0.bgl)
3.)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\SCENERY\WORLD\SCENERY\

This is (probably) why Frank just puts everything (including AI traffic) into the one NEWFOLDER in the number-one (#1) option above.

The only (potential) problem arises when FS9 finds duplicate files; if there are no duplicates, it makes no difference where *.bgl files are placed as FS9 will find them in any of the above listed heirarchy of files (#1, #2 and last, #3).

Hope this answered your question. (. . . hope someone has better explanation :-) I (S)earched this forum for past 60 days and did not find any definitive answers.

thanks for your answer wji
Just to understand You right, I have made my files ex. like this
D:\programfiles\fs2004\addon scenery\europe\ greece
and here I have put both greek mesh scenery and different airport sceneries.
but want I am in doubt about is where it should be in libraries ? low or high in area number ? and what should be highest number scenery or mesh scenery ?
Do You know what I mean ?

Snoopy51,

Welcome to the club!

You're right about the scenery bgls - as long as FS9 knows where they are, then you can put them where it's convenient for you.

Adding the areas on in the scenery library - all the downloads I've put in which have scenery and a landclass component have requested that the landclass be added second; that it, it ends up higher in the library list and therefore has higher priority.

I'm not sure it makes that much difference, as long as they are above the default scenery that they replace.

Hope this helps,
;)

Hello,  microlight
I will now follow your advice and place mesh/landclass higher up in the list, than the scenery files.
So I will place all my mesh/landclass from the top, and then afterwoods I place all my sceneries before the defaulth scenery.
Thanks for your help
