I am SO annoyed with FS9

Postby RollerBall » Wed Aug 03, 2005 12:11 pm

I've been working on and off on my Kai Tak scenery and because you can't refresh the scenery in FS2004 the way you can in FS2002 you have to keep stopping and starting it. So one minute it's working fine, the next it's disappeared up its own backside. Now for some reason I'm getting at best pauses every few seconds while it refreshes ALL of the textures on the screen, or even worse, total hanging. And between working and not working I hadn't made any changes. At least when it hangs and you have FR toggled on the screen it shows zero FR, so that's alright then.

And when it hangs, what do you get? Yep, you've guessed it. Switch off, switch on, and then 'one of your bloody disks needs checking'. Not a lot of fun when you have a pretty heavily loaded 160 gig.

Are MS programmers the worst and the most flakey in the world? I certainly have an opinion on that and judging by the constant stream of 'updates' that flood every day out of Seattle...'expletive deleted' as Nixon might have said.

It's good for MS that they can make such huge profits from their software ..... while their customers test it for them. Wish I could do that in MY business.

...feel better? ;D

I haven't the foggiest idea why it would need to constantly refresh all of the textures. Does it do this when flying anywhere? or just in your Kai Tak scenery?

Ha!

Everywhere. Starts up and hangs almost immediately now. Been on the forums here for - ahem - a while now. Never in the history of the World has a single piece of software been deinstalled and reinstalled so many times by so many people because of 'unexplained' problems. That's what I meant in my original post.

We keep seeing posts about 'what I would like in the next version'. Personally what I would like is a bit more stability and reliability.

In the business it's called robustness. A program shouldn't fall over every time a fish in the goldfish bowl next to the computer farts.

OK - found the reason. Something had bitten lumps out of my graphics driver. Why'd it decide to do that? The program's supposed to use the driver, not attack it.

And if it wasn't FS9 it must have been Windows so in either event I hold Mr Bill Bl**dy Gates personally responsible for the time of wasted sorting it out. I'll send him a bill - he can afford it

Obviously you haven't tried Falcon 4.0, that one's a killer for reinstalls. They even have a name for it, they call it (the constant reinstalls)... "The Dance"

Yes they can Jared, I've heard them. All watery mammals can.

I'm sorry Rollerball, but Goldfish are fish, not mammels buddy  :) (havin' a pretty rough day huh bubba?)

Hi Roger.

Interesting you mention that you can't update scenery in FS9 like you could in FS8 - I've had the opposite experience; not with scenery though, but with panel design. I've got both sims set up to 'reload user aircraft' assigned to the backslash key, and FS9 does it far more reliably than FS8 does - on my setup at least. So now I can fine-tune gauge placement and see the gauge move in FS9, whereas I had to re-start in FS8.

Hmmm. Sorry this probably doesn't help!
