Impossibility

System: 1,5gh CPU,  Win 98SE. 512 Ram ; 128 Video Ram , 2 drives 160g & 80g).  Has been working fine and still does. But lately, when I load FS9, right after the splash screen, I het the following error: Your Computer has run out of Memory. FS9 will exit. You may not have enough space on your drive, run scandisk and try again.
I verify - my Ram , My drive is 118G, and Scandisk WILL not work on the drive -yes on the others. Reinstalled FS9 to no avail. I am suspecting my last downloaded add-on.  which was a bunch of afcads.  Any one with a clue ?  Also I get this illegal operation pointing at MFC70.dll

If scandisk will not work on the drive... it has nothing to do with the sim.  You probably have bigger fish to fry.

Are you sure that the drive is not full?  Scandisk won't run if there is no space for a temp file.  How big is your swap file... and is it dynamic or fixed?  Maybe that is eating up your "free" space and you don't know it.

Did you try "closing unnecessary background programs" before starting FS? What does your Task Manager say about Physical Memory and Page File Usage prior to loading FS?

Sounds like a messed up Windows install (all Windows installs tend to 'mess up' after a few years of use w/o reformats); my XP drive on my FS computer recently became chewed up (corrupted as hell), probably from 2 mnths use on broadband w/o AV protection.

If you have the time, reformat and reinstall, preferably with Win2K or WinXP. If nothing else works, doing that will make sure that your issues either will be fixed or are not sofware related. I have no idea about MFC70.dll, but a quick Google states that it it is required by VC++ apps.

Also, try moving your pagefile to it's own partition; preferably on a different physical drive than the C drive.  In XP, I run my pagefile at 1.5 Gig on a 3 Gig partition.  This will give you faster speeds on your rig all around, and make it easier to defragment the pagefile, which you should do often.

One other possibility, is that Win98 was never intended to run with such huge hard drives.  It was designed around a max of 30, I believe (I could be wrong).  At any rate, it's not really good at running 240.  Having to search through such a large amount of space may be confusing it.

Like Kevin said, Win98SE probably does not pick up either of your drives at their capacity. I know the limit for XP SP1 was 137.2 GB (?) per drive, so it can only be <= for Win98SE.

Just a thought. Do you use a download manager? I run FS9 on WinMe with no trouble at all. I recently started having all sorts of virtual memory problems with similar error messages. I do a lot of work with images & it was a blasted nuisance having to reboot every 5 minutes or so. I was tearing my hair out in clumps & beginning to suspect my RAM or some other hardware problem. I finally tracked this down to the latest version of DAP. Promptly uninstalled it & had no problems since.

I you're working with multiple, hi-res images doing any kind of multi-layer work.. cutting and pasting, etc... you can RAM-crash even Windows2003sever (a true 64-bit O/S) and 1024MB of RAM.

I'd hate to start an O/S flame war, but seriously guys.. FS2000 pushed 98SE and ME to their limits. FS2002 needed XP and that gig of RAM (that 98 or ME can't run stably). FS9 needs a MINIMUM of 1024MB (I could see a big difference when I went from 1 to 2 GB)
