First Flight - A couple of questions

Hi again all,

Well, I took the plunge and bought FS9 plus a new joystick and tonight went for my first flight. I decided to go with my local airport here and took off from London City Airport. What a BLAST!! Loved every minute of it. It's almost 2am here and I would love another go but have to try to get some sleep

I managed the flight fine and just flew around getting used to the controls for a while and managing to lose myself completely!! But once I had got my bearings again I headed back to the airport and managed to land the plane not too badly. What I did have problems with was finding where to go after landing and I ended up in the water :S Typical, I get it up and back in one piece and then dump it in the drink trying to park the thing!!

Anyway, a couple of questions regarding the scenery... although there were places that I could identify easily I was a little surprised that a number of landmarks weren't visible. For instance 2 major sized toweres by Canary Wharf weren't there which I expected would be and also I expected things like football stadiums to also be part of the scenery. Are these things that would be included as part of the add-on packs I saw when  I bought the sim for the different parts of the country or am I just expecting too much?

Are these add-ons a recommended purchase or are they not really neccesary. They are not exactly cheap and I could see myself spending way too much in a very short space of time!!

I did a search of the downloads section and found a London City update but unfortunately it was for FS2000 and looking at the instructions it mentions some scenery folders that don't appear with FS9. The process for adding scenery in the FS9 FAQ is totally different so would it work using that method or is FS2000 scenery not compatible with the latest version?

I couldn't find a shareware version aswell, but i found this package,

Looks VERY nice and VERY detailed, and well worth the suprising cheap price.
Shareware versions are still appreciated SimV's

Hi Peter,

There's a freeware add-on that was designed for FS2002 but you can use a part of it in FS9. It's called MILDOMECANARYWHARFv1.zip by Oliver Minchin which you'll be able to find by googling. It contains an update to the Millennium Dome for FS2002 which was in the wrong place, so you don't want to use this part, as it's fine in FS9.

However, in the package there is a scenery addon for the very towers you mentioned, including the HSBC building right next to One Canada Square. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll see what I can do.

Remember it's a US designed program and therefore not UK specific. Here in Australia, we get pretty much "bugger all" as far as scenery goes. Fortunately there are plenty of local scenery designers who are doing a great job improving that situation.

MS did a pretty good job considering the disk space they had to get the program onto. I wonder if the next FS will come out on DVD? That would be great and allow for a lot more scenery.

Thanks for the info microlight. I found it no problem and installed it straight away and have flown it and the missing towers are now there

I think the developers did a great job with FS2004 and but these little tweaks,etc we can add just make it all the better.
