A FS server running on a Linux machine ??

Postby -sam- » Wed Jul 20, 2005 8:21 am

Ok this question is not so stupid how it might sound
in the first second. ;D
Is there any possibility to have a Flightsim server running
on a linux machine ?? Like there are a lot of windows games out there that offer a dedicated linux server. Actually I doubt microsoft will release something like that.
But is there any 3rd party software out that offers something like this ? I mean vatsim for example also completely uses their own software and seem to bypass microsoft

I just checked and Vatsim seems to use Unix (Linux) machines. When I do an anonymous ftp login on that vatsim
server (152.104.96.225) my ftp clients tells me it

MS would have to offer a server-side Linux app. I don't know if they do already, mind.

Hi
From the FShost FAQ
http://www.chocolatesoftware.com/fshost/

Can FSHost run on Unix/Linux?

Unfortunately, no.  Flight Simulator uses Microsoft's DirectPlay (part of DirectX) for all of the game communication, so that's what FSHost uses to talk to it. Unfortunately DirectPlay is a proprietary system, and so far hasn't been ported to the Unix environment. (There are some systems such as WINE that have made attempts, but so far I don't believe anyone's gotten it to work completely yet.) I'd love to build a Unix version though, so maybe one day we'll be able to.

cheers
